An unidentified metal pillar that was found and attracted attention in the Utah desert has disappeared.

On the 28th (local time), foreign media such as the New York Times (NYT) reported that a 10-foot-high metal pillar found in the western desert of the United States suddenly disappeared before the identity was revealed. The pillar was accidentally discovered by officials who were investigating the environment in the middle of the Utah desert on the 18th, and disappeared on the 27th, 9 days after its existence.

State authorities said in a statement on the 28th that “we received a reliable report that the illegally installed structure had been demolished.” The authorities added that the time of the demolition was the “Afternoon of 27”, but as for who was demolished, it was “an unidentified group” and only referred to “individual or group.”

The pillar in question is a triangular metal structure with a height of approximately 3.6 m and a shiny surface, it is built firmly into the ground and there are no traces of installation around it, so all kinds of speculation have been made.

At the time of discovery, authorities jokingly issued a warning, saying, “It is illegal to place facilities on federal government commons without permission” and “it is the same for any star.”

Conspiracy theories such as ‘the theory of alien intervention’ have circulated on social media, but among the hypotheses that have been raised, the most plausible scenario is that it is a work of art installed by someone.

Among them, NYT cited sculptor and science fiction enthusiast John McCracken (died 2011) as one of the top candidates.

In fact, the gallery, which exhibited his work during his lifetime, insisted on NYT that “Macracon’s work is safe.”

His children also said: “In my life, my father said: ‘I want my work to be in a place where no one knows.’

Internet media Cnet put forward a more realistic hypothesis.

Internet users analyzed that the mainstay of the problem appeared for the first time between 2015 and 2016 from satellite photos, etc., which is that it overlaps with the filming period of a science fiction drama set in the West in the United States.

Cnet reported that “there is a possibility that the filming structure was not accidentally demolished and abandoned” and “or the site official may have left it as a joke.”

Whatever their identity, the BBC reported that several explorers have already gone out into the field to see the mysterious pillars. Authorities did not reveal the exact location of the pillars in case someone got lost, but said they were able to track it with GPS or similar.

According to the BBC, the first explorers arrived just 48 hours after Utah announced that it had found the metal pillar. The first person to leave the verification shot was David Server, 33, a former United States Army officer living in Utah.

He used Google Earth to locate the metal pillar on the Internet community site Reddit, and drove six hours to find it. The location of the metal pillar was found by a Reddit user while tracking the helicopter’s flight path at the time.

The server posted an ‘authentication shot’ on its Instagram account and added explanations such as “no magnetism”, “there are three sides pinned” and “there is void”.
