Parents who were charged with “child neglect” for two years after the loss of a two-week-old baby to a UK-raised dog dropped the charges. According to foreign media such as the BBC on the 11th, British law enforcement officers finally decided to dismiss the couple.
Daniel McNulty (33) and Amy Richfield (30), who raised two Staffordshire Bull Terriers, a kind of fighting dog. Reuben McNulty was born to the couple in November 2018. The couple decided to keep their dogs after giving birth.
About two weeks after birth, one of the two bull terriers cruelly bit the couple’s baby at home. The baby was taken to hospital due to serious injuries to organs such as the head, heart and stomach, but died three weeks later.
The baby’s medical examiner said: “The baby was horribly attacked by a dog” and “every wound proves an attack by a dog.” Police began investigating which of the two bull terriers attacked the baby, but ultimately did not reveal it, and both were euthanized.
Shortly after the grief over the loss of the baby, British prosecutors and police immediately arrested her parents for neglecting the children. After being released on bail, the investigation continued extensively.
It was noted that Amy, the baby’s mother, was excessively caring for her dogs and expressed her intentions to keep her dogs on social media as ‘baby’, and that her neighbors were concerned about her after giving birth. Another neighbor said that the bull terriers they were raising were very ferocious, showing their teeth to strangers and growling.
However, there were testimonies that the couple faithfully fulfilled their responsibilities as parents of their babies. McNulty’s father-in-law argued that “the death of the baby is a very strange accident. There are people who bring the son-in-law to terrible parents, but they are not at all and there is nothing wrong.”
After two years of tedious investigation, these parents were released from the charges. It was taken into account that the parents of the babies are the biggest victims. The police reconfirmed the non-accusation, saying: “The 30-year-old couple, who were accused of neglecting children for two years, will no longer be investigated.”
