China’s congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris 10 days after the US presidential election was a thoughtful act to consider current President Donald Trump among Chinese experts.

In an interview with the state-run Global Times newspaper on the 14th, Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at the Chinese University of Foreign Affairs, said: “The Chinese Foreign Ministry named Biden as ‘Mr.’ “For one thing, I admitted that Biden and Harris had a distinct advantage,” he said.

“China has expressed respect for President Trump and his voters, who want to overturn the results of the presidential elections with a lawsuit, but are wary of congratulations,” said Professor Li.

“While US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continues to encourage China, China is looking after its relationship with the next administration,” he said. “In China, President Trump understands the authenticity of China and it will no longer cause problems with China-US relations. I hope not.”

In the past, when the results of the US presidential elections were released, China congratulated the president on behalf of China’s top leader, the President of the Republic of Korea.

Luxiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said: “Unless President Trump accepts the election results, it is unlikely that top Chinese leaders will officially congratulate those elected.”

Shinchang, a professor at the US Research Center, notes that China’s congratulatory greetings were announced after Minister Pompeo’s comments that undermined the “one country and two systems” principle that Taiwan is not part of China.

Professor Shin analyzed: “The announcement by the Foreign Ministry on the 13th was that China wanted to send a signal to Biden that bilateral relations should not be damaged by irresponsible individuals like Pompeo.”
