General Motors and GM of the United States have announced a massive recall after acknowledging that Volt electric vehicles sold around the world are at risk of fire while charging. This electric vehicle is equipped with LG Chem batteries and 9,500 vehicles are subject to recall in Korea. Reporter Lee Kwang-yeop. GM’s US headquarters announced that it will voluntarily recall the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle produced between 2017 and 2019. Models equipped with LG Chem batteries are subject to recall, including 68,000 units in total and 9,500 units in Korea. GM explained the background to the recall that the Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating and receiving reports of fire hazards from Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle owners, and GM has also cooperated. The US Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that there is a risk of fire, even when not loaded, and recommends parking outside your home. GM informed consumers about how to update software through its website, saying that limiting battery power to 90% can prevent fires. GM Korea also decided to provide detailed information on recall measures to electric vehicle drivers in Korea. LG Chem said it has been in discussions with GM regarding the investigation of the battery pack fire and that it will take time to determine the exact cause.
