Candidate Marylin Strickland (58, Korean name Sunja), a Korean woman who challenged the US House of Representatives, was elected in the elections held on the 3rd (local time), the Associated Press reported on the 4th.
Candidate Strickland won the 10th Washington State Constituency as a Democrat, finishing second in the primaries (preliminary election) and defeating Washington State Congresswoman Beth Doglio from the same party.
He obtained 58.3% of the votes in the middle count and overthrew Congressman Doglio with 41.7%.
The precinct was vacated when former Republican Congressman Denny Heck resigned to run for lieutenant governor of Washington state.
With this victory, the elect Strickland became the first Korean woman in the United States House of Representatives and the first African-American congresswoman in the state of Washington. In addition, he became the third Korean-American to be elected to the House of Representatives after former Congressman Chang-jun Kim and Andy Kim (the third constituency of the Democratic State and New Jersey) who won re-election this time.
Strickland-elect was born in Seoul in September 1962 to Kim In-min, a Korean mother, and Willie Strickland, a black American father.
Strickland, who came to the U.S. When his father was assigned to the Fort Lee base in Virginia at the age of 1, he graduated from Mount Tacoma High School and studied business at the University of Washington and an MBA. of Business (MBA) at Clark Atlanta University.
Elected to the Tacoma City Council through Northern Life Insurance Company and Starbucks, and entered politics, Strickland was elected Mayor of Tacoma after two years of council experience and served as Mayor from 2010 to 2018.
She was the first Asian mayor of Tacoma and the first black woman to be elected mayor of Tacoma.
After completing the mayoral position, he served as president of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
Streakland-elect has shown that he is proud of his identity as Korean Eggs and appreciates the spiritual heritage he inherited from his mother.
His election campaign website says that if elected, he will be “the first black American to represent Washington state at the federal level, and the first Korean-American woman in the 230-year history of Congress.”
In an interview with Northwest Asian Weekly, the chosen Strickland also stated that her identity is a half Korean, half black woman. “I was lucky because education and being good at school were the values my parents gave me,” he said.
“My mom in particular was trying to make sure I did something that would improve my school work,” Strickland emphasized. “She knew she hadn’t completed her formal education and she really wanted her to have it.”
He also told the University of Washington magazine in 2016 when he was mayor of Tacoma: “I think of the power of a mother who came to this country as an immigrant. I want to emulate her endurance, patience and strength.”
He said that when elected, health, education and clean energy jobs will be top priorities.
