[국제]Fierce battle in Florida … 80% of votes count, 49.5% Trump, 49.6% Biden

First, let’s go to the southeastern United States. It can be said that it is a representative contender and an area that can decide the party’s decision in this election. Some time ago the situation of the count was communicated.

I am now in Tallasi, Florida. How is the atmosphere there?

[이선아]

The time here is 7:50 PM. The entire vote was over 50 minutes ago. As previously reported, candidate Joe Biden edged out President Trump by a slight margin. As you might expect, a fierce battle is raging.

In Florida’s case, candidate Biden dominates the media poll results, but Democratic supporters still feel anxious. Also, since there were so many previous votes, we still have to carefully await the final result.

This is where the state government is located, but it is a small city with a population of less than 500,000. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, it is difficult to find a crowd gathering to see the election results.

However, they are observing the counting situation in their homes and praying for the final victory of the candidates they support. Also, you can see the reactions after the hot vote on social media. Even in the case of my American friends, they also enthusiastically share their opinions while monitoring the counting trend in real time.

It can be said that it is the scene of a new electoral day that takes place due to the epidemic. Although the results of the exit poll were released, the pre-vote reached 100 million in this election, which is almost half the maximum total number of voters. In my case, when I go to state university, most of my friends are college students or faculty members.

So there are a lot of progressive Democratic supporters. Although candidate Biden is said to be ahead of the exit investigation, he is still anxious. It seems to be due to painful memories of Hillary Clinton, who was ahead of the polls four years ago in the presidential election and suffered a shocking defeat in the final election.

Florida has been talked about a lot as a competitive state. Why is Florida so important?

[이선아]

Florida, when it was decided as a constituency 40 years ago, has continued to follow a runner’s name. It is also called the state of oscillation, or state of oscillation, because the votes come and go. Also, because the votes are completely unpredictable, it has been given such a fun nickname for flipping coins.

It has the third largest electoral body of the 50 states and the District of Washington. 29 people. The population has grown rapidly in the last 60 years, especially with the influx of immigrants from South America, wealthy white retirees, and tourist facilities in Orlando.

At the same time, its importance as an electoral district grows. As the population continues to grow, the number of voters is expected to increase after this presidential election. Due to this diverse population, it is impossible to measure political orientation.

Although it is slightly classified as a Republican propensity, it has continued to show fierce battles in the elections. In particular, in the presidential election that the Democratic Party Barack Obama won eight years ago, the difference between the winners and the losers was less than 1 percentage point.

And four years ago, then-candidate Donald Trump also beat Hillary Clinton by 1.2 percentage points. Even in the poll results that just came out, the vote difference was just over 1%. Interestingly, except once in 1992, the candidate who always took Florida in the presidential election has been elected, and nothing more clearly demonstrates his importance as a constituency in Florida than this fact.

The candidates put a lot of effort into it. Even five days before voting day, President Trump and candidate Biden campaigned on the same day, not in the same location, but in a span of time. In the case of President Trump in particular, he moved his residence to his home in Florida, Palm Beach.

So if you give up Florida, you can say that the bare minimum of giving up your own residency is the result of sore bones hurting your pride.

In the US presidential election, this time the voting fever was very hot. It will also lead to real participation. How was the atmosphere of the site that Mr. Lee felt directly?

[이선아]

My Tallahassee is in North Florida. It is the capital of the state of Florida. There is also a large state university with more than 14,000 professors alone. Due to state officials and the faculty, Talahazi itself can be described as a Democratic city. However, North Florida is traditionally a conservative place.

Only in Leon County, where Tallahassee is located, about the size of ours, does it have a strong Democratic lean. However, if he drove out of town a bit, he could see a lot of propaganda props that Trump and Vice President Pence supporters put up door to door and store to store.

The voting fever was very hot. In a class today, a teacher of mine volunteered at a polling place in another state, and by 10 a.m., the ballots were already running out, so there was a feeling of distributing number plates to voters who came to vote. He said.

Also, when I look at social media, I mostly voted for social media users. Photos with stickers like this are getting shared a lot. This was not much different from the Korean voting landscape. The uncle who lives next door also went to the local polling place early this morning to vote, put a sticker on it, and came with a happy expression.

Furthermore, this voting fever was felt not only in the electoral party like today, but throughout the entire period leading up to the vote. Early voting began here in Florida on the 19th of last month. From the first day of early voting, there were long lines at all neighborhood polling places. The vehicle line also created this type of scenario.

The rush for such a pre-vote wasn’t just about Florida. Two weeks before Election Day, I had a brief visit to Georgia in the north, and it was a very small rural village. So, there weren’t many polling places. When I went there, from early in the morning, I could see a line waiting for votes of all ages, men and women, lined up about 100 meters.

Of course, the interpretation of this hot voting fever was different. Supporters of Democrats must defeat President Trump this time. That’s why so many people go to the polls, and I said so, of course. Republican supporters have a sense of crisis as a result of President Trump’s rejection in various opinion polls.

So I’m looking for back-to-back polls to help the president, and I said this. But just looking at the number of voters who voted, it turns out that there are many more Democratic supporters. In the case of pre-voting. In particular, Democratic Party supporters voted a lot by mail because they were more inclined to react very sensitively to the coronavirus.

So today’s count results can only be known when preliminary results, including vote-by-mail, are released. There are many thoughtful stories like this.

Now we only show it in graph. 80% of the votes have been counted and, in the case of Florida, it goes quite fast, but I think it is very rare. For Biden’s 49.6% and President Trump’s 49.5%, the gap is just 0.1 percentage points, so it seems like a situation where the outcome is truly unpredictable.

Even when I feel the local atmosphere in Florida right now, I think it is difficult to judge which side is dominant in the election results.

[이선아]

Like you said, now there is only a 0.1% difference in points. No one can be sure that even if you look at the website like the press that continues to conduct this survey and announce the results of the exit, the percentage is constantly changing. However, since it is a competition of this type, the anxiety increases, as some other result of the defeat is seeing it.

President Trump will not agree with the election, has he not kept saying this? At the same time, concerns about violence in big cities continue to emerge. In particular, a few days ago, we were concerned about the violence at Wal-Mart, the largest distribution chain in the United States, so when we announced that we would remove or demolish all guns and bullets from the shelves, there was growing anxiety. that there was real violence.

However, a few days later, the violence of Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart appear to be somewhat separate from each other, and they withdrew their position for a small arbitrary reason. The voice of concern about the situation of violence grows so much that this reversal of the decision is also on the subject.

However, as I said, Talaha is not a densely populated place so this overheated atmosphere is felt and it is not. However, through the media, news continues to be delivered about the protesters in places like Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville, which are famous in the big cities of Florida.

Indeed, this harsh atmosphere is a growing concern as backlash against President Trump mounts. In my case, in the case of the friends I meet at school, there are a lot of Democratic supporters, but unfortunately, there are a lot of Republican supporters in the neighborhood where I live. So fortunately I was able to hear both opinions.

The main reason for not supporting President Trump is, above all, not being able to cope very well with the coronavirus. Especially among Republican supporters, there are quite a few people who say they have changed their minds to see President Trump’s response to the epidemic.

Of course, this is my totally personal opinion. However, the Brookings Research Institute, a leading group of conservative American experts, has conducted a similar analysis. In this view, Republican supporters 45 and older could definitely support Biden’s victory in the race.

In particular, there was an analysis that said it was because I didn’t like President Trump’s response to the epidemic. As I am also an international student, I had many opportunities to hear stories from international students from various countries. In particular, international students have no right to vote, but are inevitably interested because government diplomats control visas to stay in the US and various immigration-related policies.

But President Trump continued to devise anti-immigrant policies that could shake up the situation for international students. So before these elections, I have lost a lot of love among international students.

Heard about the Florida atmosphere. The current counting situation is quite flexible. I think the two candidates are up and down. It is not easy to determine the correct moment.
