According to the New York Times (NYT), some 30 Navy SEAL Team 6 agents were put into an operation to rescue the son of the kidnapped American missionary, Philip Wilton, 27. They landed on a parachute, traveled about 4.8 km, and raided the kidnapper’s hideout in the forest. An unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) hovered in the sky. Navy agents immediately became involved with the kidnappers. Wilton was rescued safely and without injury, and there were no American casualties. Several kidnappers were shot at the scene, and one reportedly escaped the darkness. NYT said the engagement was “brief but intense.”

According to the United States Department of Defense, Wilton had lived with his wife and daughter on a farm in Masarata in Niger, on the border with Nigeria. At the time of the kidnapping, a stranger appeared and begged for money, and as soon as Walton gave him $ 40, gunmen of life appeared on motorcycles, kidnapped Walton, and ran away. The kidnappers are said to have demanded around $ 1 million (1.13 billion won) in ransom from Wilton. The hijackers are also believed to have intended to sell Wilton to terrorist groups. The rescue operation was supported by the Nigerian and Nigerian governments, and the hijackers’ currency was reportedly traced to identify the hiding place.

This rescue operation was carried out three days before the US presidential elections (November 3). NYT reported that the operation was confirmed to have been approved by President Trump.
