Family members of an official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries who were killed by the North Korean military met with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and requested international cooperation to resolve the case. Minister Kang is said to have responded that he would cooperate as much as possible, but until the end of a month, North Korea quietly responded to the request for a joint investigation. This is reporter Dowon Kim. Lee Rae-jin, the brother of an official who was killed by North Korean forces in the West Sea, visited the Foreign Ministry. As Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said, during his inspection of state affairs, he met with the grieving family of a civil servant. In a 30-minute private interview, Lee asked the government to publicize the case to the international community. In particular, he requested that the case be included in the North Korean human rights resolution currently being discussed. He also asked for cooperation with the Chinese government to search for his brother’s body and return the remains. The 3rd Committee of the UN General Assembly, to be held the day after tomorrow, will discuss the ‘North Korea Human Rights Report’, which judged this case as a violation of international human rights law. Furthermore, the North Korean human rights resolution is also under editorial discussion, so we are interested in whether it will include the murder of a public official. The Foreign Ministry said it is in close consultation with the European Union, which is preparing the draft, and will decide whether to participate in the country’s joint proposal considering the situation on the Korean peninsula and the content of the resolution.
