The prosecution announced the results of the investigation into the criminals of the 21 general elections.

Among the 21 elected to the National Assembly, it was confirmed that 27 people, slightly more than was originally known, were handed over to trial.

149 people were charged, of which 27 were prosecuted.

By type of case, black and illegal propaganda was the most, with 10 people, followed by 7 people related to elections, money and money elections, 6 people and 4 people violating the party’s campaign.

Specific figures for each party were not released.

Compared to the 33 people prosecuted before the expiry of the statute of limitations in the general elections of the 1920s, it is somewhat small.

The prosecution explained that the proportion of electoral money and property criminals has decreased, and that the proportion of black criminals and illegal propaganda has increased, which are relatively difficult to prove due to recent strict regulations.

In the global figure, including those elected, 2,874 people were charged, of which 1,154 were prosecuted.

This is also a low number compared to the 20 general elections.

The prosecution explained that the impact of Corona 19 appears to be the result of fewer offline campaigns and less face-to-face contact between candidates and voters.

The number of people processed under arrest has dropped significantly.

In the general elections of the 1920s, up to 114 people were arrested, but this time only 36 were handed over to trial.

This appears to be in accordance with the internal policy of the prosecution to comply with the principle of undisputed investigation.

In fact, the prosecution said that the number of detainees was considerably reduced by requesting arrest warrants only for serious crimes that interfere with the normal execution of criminal law, such as destruction of evidence or fear of escape, or seriously damage the electoral system of public charges.

Under the Public Officials Elections Act, if an elected official is sentenced to prison or a fine of 1 million won or more, and a spouse, election clerk or accountant with a penalty of 3 million won or more, the election will not It is valid.

In the general elections of the 1920s, 7 of the 33 people tried before the statute of limitations were finally declared invalid.

At the same time, the prosecution emphasized that the prosecution will continue to thoroughly investigate and clarify the merits of the crimes that are not subject to the short-term statute of limitations, such as the suspension of the statute of limitations for accusation of an accomplice or related to electoral expenses.
