Will the hydrogen economy be resilient? Looking for ways to contribute to human society with hydrogen
President Eui-sun Eui, who became the head of Hyundai Motor Group, took his first official step with the “hydrogen economy”.
President Chung has focused on expanding the market for hydrogen electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell systems.
Even after becoming president, he is expected to continue to make great strides towards the realization of a hydrogen society.
According to the government and industry on the 15th, President Chung will attend the 2nd Hydrogen Economics Committee as one of the private members of the 2nd Hydrogen Economics Committee, which will be held at the Seoul Government Complex in the morning. of that day.
The Hydrogen Economy Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, is a hydrogen economy control tower made up of 8 related ministries, including the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Equipment and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, and experts private in every field, including industry, academia, and civic groups.
President Chung previously attended the first meeting held in July and said: “The next Nexo model will be launched in 3-4 years.”
At that time, after the meeting, President Chung and Prime Minister Chung and others watched the ‘2020 Hydrogen Mobility + Show’ exhibition for 20 minutes, and then they took a Nexo hydrogen car and left the showroom to call the Attention.

Although the timeline was established before President Chung’s inauguration, it is noted that Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen business will gain more momentum in the future as the first official timeline to implement the hydrogen economy.
Since President Chung has emphasized the importance of hydrogen as a new source of energy for humanity, it is expected that he will seek ways to contribute to human society through various uses of hydrogen in the future.
Earlier, President Chung emphasized that “electricity production using hydrogen will grow as a future green energy solution and a core industry in the future” at the ‘Korea Version New Deal National Reporting Contest’ in July.
Hyundai Motor Group is already making comprehensive efforts to foster the hydrogen-related industrial ecosystem as a new growth engine in the future.
Hyundai Motor Group managed to mass-produce the world’s first large-scale hydrogen electric truck this year and began exporting to Europe.
In June, 10 Exient hydrogen electric trucks were exported to Switzerland, with 40 units exported by the end of this year, and then 1,600 units are planned to be supplied in stages by 2025.
Last month, the Nexo hydrogen electric vehicle and the ELECITY FCEV hydrogen electric bus were exported to Saudi Arabia, the largest oil-producing country in the Middle East, and were assessed as attempting to change the paradigm of car fuel.
Hydrogen fuel cell systems are also being actively sold, including the export of hydrogen fuel cell systems to Swiss hydrogen storage technology companies.
President Chung emphasized in his New Year’s speech earlier this year, “For hydrogen electric vehicles with world-class technology, we will begin to sell fuel cell systems and vehicles from this year, and lead the expansion of the hydrogen industry ecosystem through cooperation in related infrastructure construction projects. ” to have.
Hydrogen electric vehicle sales are also expected to accelerate.
Hyundai Motor Company ranked first in hydrogen electric vehicle sales with the Nexo, which sold 4,987 units worldwide last year, and this year it also sold 3,292 Nexos, the world’s largest number through the first half of this year. .
Chairman Chung is also actively involved in activities to realize a hydrogen society, including serving as co-chair of the Hydrogen Committee from 2019 until June.
The Hydrogen Committee is an advisory body for global hydrogen-related CEOs that was launched at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
In an official speech at the Meeting of Ministers of Energy and Environment in 20 Major Countries (G20) in June last year, President Chung also urged him to participate in the realization of a hydrogen economy society, saying: “The hydrogen economics is the most reliable solution for future successful energy conversion. “
At a plenary meeting of the CEO of the Hydrogen Committee held in Paris, France in January this year, three directions were presented: reduction of costs through technological innovation, greater acceptance of the general public and establishment of a management system of security for the entire value chain. World leaders and CEOs of major auto and parts manufacturers also discussed responses to climate change and energy conversion through interviews.
Hyundai Motor Group has been conducting a “global hydrogen campaign” with BTS since January this year.
BTS appeared at the US Grammy Awards in January in a Nexo hydrogen and electric car, and in February, Hyundai Motor Company appeared in the ‘Global Hydrogen Campaign’ video projected as an advertisement in New York Times Square.
