The head of the National Assembly intelligence committee officially confirmed that the former Italian ambassador to North Korea, Jo Sung-gil, voluntarily entered South Korea a year ago.

It is an explanation that has not been disclosed so far for the personal safety of him and his family in the north.

The opposition party is in a position to suspect that the asylum fact has blown up only a year later, but the Blue House and the government are looking at the situation, saying it is shameful.

In a meeting with journalists, Democrat Jeon Jeon-cheol, head of the National Assembly’s intelligence committee, confirmed that former North Korean Ambassador Sung-gil entered South Korea last July.

In particular, he emphasized that former Ambassador Cho voluntarily expressed his intention to go to Korea on several occasions.

He explained that the reason his arrival in the country was not disclosed was because he did not love her, and that he was worried about his family in North Korea.

We have not confirmed whether North Korea has contacted our government on this matter.

The route prior to the entry of former Ambassador Cho, if he lived in Korea, and his motivation to travel to Korea were also closed for personal protection.

It is also the constant position of the Blue House and intelligence agencies that the personal information of North Korean defectors cannot be verified for reasons such as the safety of their families who remain in North Korea.

Still, the opposition party believes there are dubious reasons why the asylum was lifted after a year.

It is argued that the government and the ruling party, prompted by various adverse events such as the assassinations of Korean officials in North Korea, were “abandoned” for the purpose of changing the situation.

Aside from the opposition’s suspicions, the Blue House and the government are also embarrassed by the emergence of sensitive inter-Korean issues one after another.

In particular, North Korea, which is increasing its internal solidarity ahead of the party’s 75th anniversary ceremony on the 10th, has no choice but to sensitively accept the highest-ranking diplomats going to Korea.

President Moon Jae-in promised to solve the murder case of our officials through dialogue, but now news of the asylum of North Korean diplomats has emerged as an unexpected variable.

Until the North Korean reaction comes out, the Blue House is expected to pay close attention to the impact of inter-Korean relations while concentrating on managing the situation.
