The Security and Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters meeting is currently taking place at the Seoul Government Complex, chaired by Prime Minister Chung Sye-gyun.
Let’s hear the comments from Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun’s meeting a while ago.
[정세균 / 국무총리]Today is the last day of the five-day Chuseok vacation.
At the beginning of the Christmas season, the government asked people to refrain from moving and pledged to create a peaceful vacation without serious accidents.
As of this morning, compared to last year, the average number of accidents per day has decreased by 25% and the number of deaths has decreased by 40%, which can be evaluated as having spent the Chuseok holidays in a generally safe and quiet environment.
I am deeply grateful to the people for responding to the government’s request and I would like to express my encouragement to the public officials who have suffered in front of the police and firefighters.
During this Christmas season, there were an average of 62 confirmed cases of corona19 per day in Korea.
The situation is improving than we were concerned about because many citizens refrained from moving and followed quarantine regulations.
I would like to express my gratitude to medical staff, quarantine authorities, and local government officials for their incessant efforts in the quarantine field.
However, it is not yet a reassuring step.
Considering Corona 19’s maximum 14-day incubation period, there is a possibility that the number of confirmed cases will rise again due to the quiet spread during the Christmas season.
In particular, it is of concern that sporadic infections continue to occur in hospitals and nursing facilities in the metropolitan area and Busan.
As the special quarantine period lasts for one week, we must not curb the tension so that we can achieve a certain level of stability.
Fortunately, yesterday, the first day, there were no large-scale demonstrations in central Seoul, and some small-scale vehicle demonstrations ended without much friction.
Citizens generously understood that there were traffic problems in some areas.
We would like to express our gratitude and encouragement to all the local government officials, including the police, who did everything possible to block the illegal montage and manage the site.
Some groups are said to be planning meetings for the upcoming Hangeul Day.
The government will not allow this for the sake of life and the safety of the people.
Organizations preparing to meet are urged to stop trying to meet illegally for the safety of the community.
October 2, during the Christmas season, was Senior Citizen Day and October is Senior Citizen Month as well.
However, our seniors are having a tougher year than ever.
Many older people died due to worsening of the underlying disease due to Corona 19 infection.
Even if you look at the statistics, the death rate of all confirmed corona19 cases is less than 2%, but it is more than 12%, which is 6 times higher than those in their 70s.
In particular, 95% of the deaths in September were people aged 70 and over.
Although it is best to prevent the elderly from becoming infected, there is a limit only to government quarantine measures.
We ask that you make more special efforts to prevent infection of the elderly in each home, as well as those who care about facilities such as nursing homes.
Thank you.
