On the 28th, the Daejeon Provincial Police Agency, which is investigating the delivery of mail containing poisonous material and threats to the Shincheonji Church in Daejeon on the 21st, announced on the 28th that a male suspect in his 50s was arrested and investigated.

This mail was delivered to the entrance of the Sincheonji Temple of Evidence in Yongdu-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon on the afternoon of the 21st. After confirming this, the Shincheonji Church commissioned the police to investigate.

In the mail, there was an intimidating letter with the name of a church official saying that if he did not send 1.44 billion won, it would cause a catastrophe like Shincheonji did.

As a result of the police investigation, the mobile storage device contained a bitcoin address to which the money was to be transferred, and the white powder was identified as a poison, cyanide (potassium cyanide). The original destination of the mail was the Shincheonji Church of Jesus Peace Training Center, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do ‘, and the sender was marked as Shincheonji Church in Daejeon (Matdia Land Battle).

Police said: “The Gapyeong training center returned the mail because it was not in the shape of an envelope used in Shincheonji, and it arrived at Shincheonji Church in Daejeon, marked as the destination.” The police explained that Mr. A’s trail was identified as a suspect in USB’s digital forensic analysis (evidence analysis) process.

Police are also investigating to confirm that the Gunsan Post Office in Jeonbuk maintains correspondence with the same content. The police postpone the content of the letter and it contains poisons, which is why it is considered the same crime.

As a result of the police investigation, it was found that suspect A is a resident of Seoul who has no connection to Daejeon, is not a member of Shincheonji, and has no direct relationship with Shincheonji. The suspect is reportedly continuing to deny the charges. The police believe that Mr. A, whose address is in Seoul, sent certified mail from Suwon to avoid tracing.

A police officer said: “The suspect arrested on the 24th denies the charges, but on the 26th an arrest warrant was issued for attempted blackmail,” and said: “We are investigating the specific motives of the crime against the suspect.”

Mr. A, who denies the crime, was reportedly sentenced to two years in prison for threatening: “If I don’t send 1.537 million months, I will put poison in the product” by sending a threatening letter to a large company in 2015.
