Last year, cancer was the leading cause of death among Koreans. It has been 37 years since related statistics were written in 1983. The number of deaths from Alzheimer’s (dementia) and pneumonia increased significantly as a result of aging. The suicide rate remained the highest among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
According to the ‘2019 Cause of Death Statistics’ published by the National Statistical Office on the 22nd, the number of deaths last year was 290,110. It was 3710 (-1.2%) less than a year ago. The mortality rate, which means the number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, is 574.8. It decreased by 7.6 people (-1.3%) compared to the previous year. Both the death toll and the death rate have risen for five consecutive years since 2014 and were then rejected last year.
The main cause of death was malignancy (cancer) in 27.5%. The cancer death rate is 158.2 per 100,000, a 2.5% increase from the previous year. By type of cancer, the most common deaths were from lung cancer (mortality rate 36.2), colon cancer (17.5), and stomach cancer (14.9). Pancreatic cancer followed (12.5 people).
Heart disease was the second leading cause of death after cancer. The mortality rate is 60.4. Pneumonia (45.1 people), cerebrovascular disease (42 people), suicide (26.9 people), diabetes (15.8 people), and Alzheimer’s disease (13.1 people) are also important causes of death.
In the cause of death last year, pneumonia ranked the same as in 2018 (3rd), but climbed six notches from 2009 (9th). Alzheimer’s (seventh place) also ranked two spots higher than last year. It is six steps up from 10 years ago (ranked 13).
“Alzheimer’s and pneumonia are representative senile diseases,” said Kim Soo-young, chief of Korea’s Population Trends Statistics Division.
Korea’s suicide rate remains the highest among OECD countries. The number of suicide deaths last year was 13,799, an increase of 129 (0.9%) over the previous year. The suicide mortality rate was 26.9, an increase of 0.2 (0.9%) over the previous year.
The age-standardized suicide rate in OECD countries (whose mortality rate was removed from the influence of age structure on the mortality rate to compare the level of mortality between groups of different population structures) is 24.6 . The National Statistical Office calculated using the most recent data for each country (2015-2018). As of 2018, Korea ranked first among OECD countries.
“Korea is known to be number one among OECD countries so far, and Lithuania ranked first between 2012 and 2017 as a result of providing data related to deaths when Lithuania joined the OECD in 2018,” Kim said. Soo-young. It is the first place higher than Lithuania ”.
