A member of Jehovah’s Witnesses who refused to enlist due to “religious convictions” after resuming his religious activities after nine years was sentenced.

The court ruled that his beliefs were not strong, given that he played wars and shooting games without remorse.

A has delayed enlistment for personal reasons several times since 2012.

When I was notified of enlistment again in August 2018, this time as a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, I did not enlist due to my religious beliefs.

Only two months after the Constitutional Court decided that an alternative service was needed for conscientious objectors.

However, the prosecution turned Mr. A to trial, saying it was not a legitimate objection to military service.

The first and second judges sentenced him to 10 months in prison and two years of probation, saying that Mr. A avoided serving in the military based on the constitutional decision without a firm conviction.

He noted that he has been a Shintoist since 2006, but stopped his religious activities for a time and then refused to enlist, and resumed his activities after nine years.

He was also found to have a seven-time record of punishment for blackmail and driving while intoxicated without a license.

In particular, he cited the reason why he claimed that his conscience did not react sensitively while enjoying war or shooting games as a “conscientious objection”.

The Supreme Court also confirmed the sentence, saying that this sentence was not incorrect.

In July, the Supreme Court also convicted Mr. B, who refused to enlist on the grounds of his religion without being “ baptized, ” which is the procedure for joining Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The religious beliefs that Mr. B asserts are desperate or not, we need a faithful audience.

In accordance with the 2018 Supreme Court ruling and the constitutional decision in recognition of conscientious objection to conscientious objection, the alternative service system was established.

Court rulings that strictly respect the sentences of conscientious objectors are expected to be an important reference in the selection process for alternative service workers in the future.
