Yes, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced former Justice Minister Jo Kwon Cho Kook to one year in prison.

Cho, who was released in May due to a court bail decision, was re-imprisoned after being sentenced to prison today.

Cho, who worked as the general secretary of Woongdong Academy, was put on trial on charges of inflicting 11.5 billion won in damages to the school corporation by obtaining a bond for construction costs based on false construction and file a ‘self-lawsuit’ against Woongdong Academy.

In this part, the charges of negligence were applied under the Law of Weighted Penalties for Specific Economic Crimes.

The court has been acquitted of all charges of negligence under the Special Economy Act on the grounds that the intent was not recognized or that it was merely a reaffirmation of the existing bonds.

Mr. Jo was also involved in workplace corruption of teachers.

While hiring a teacher at Woongdong High School, he gave test questions and answers to two applicants and received 180 million won in return.

Among these charges, the court said that Mr. Jo was not in charge of hiring teachers, but was in charge of the property of a school corporation, and that no crime was legally convicted and only guilty of obstructing work.

When the prosecution’s investigation began, it was revealed that the charge of teaching the destruction of evidence was not a simple teaching offense, but a joint offense led by the prosecution.

After the innocence was judged, the court explained the reason for the sentence, taking into account that Mr. Jo was convicted and regretted having been convicted by receiving a large sum of money from the teacher candidates, and the majority of the charges were found not guilty.

Today’s sentence is the second in Cho’s family case.

Cho Bum-dong, who was previously indicted on suspicions related to private equity, was sentenced to four years in prison at the first trial and is being tried by an appeal trial.

After the sentence was completed, Mr. Cho said that he believed the court had made the right decision and that he would decide whether to appeal based on the details of the ruling.
