Myung-hee Myung-hee, head of the Trade and Negotiation Headquarters of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, entered the second round of the election of the Secretary General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
According to foreign media on the 18th, it is known that Director Yoo passed the first round of elections for the next secretary-general of the WTO, which was held for ten days from 7 to 16.
The World Trade Organization is scheduled to make an official announcement on the morning of 18 Geneva time (afternoon of 18 Korean time).
Eight countries from around the world competed in this election for the Secretary General of the WTO. As a result, candidates from five countries, including Korea, advanced to the second round, and candidates from three countries, including Mexico, Egypt and Moldova, were eliminated.
Candidates for the second round include Director Yoo, former Secretary of the Treasury Ngoji Okonjoywella of Nigeria, former President of the WTO General Assembly Amina Mohamed of Kenya, former Minister of International Trade Liam Fox of Great Britain and former Minister of Economic Planning Mohammad Al Tuwaisri from Saudi Arabia. Etc.
Advancement to the second round is assessed as the achievements of Director Yoo’s qualities and experience as incumbent Minister of Commerce, and Korea’s enhanced status in the response process to Corona 19.
In addition, it contributed the collaboration and support of the entire government, such as the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions abroad. In addition, Director Yoo also visited Europe and the United States, including Geneva, and contacted ministers and ambassadors from a total of 140 member states to request support.
The second round will take place from October 24 to 6 and only two candidates will advance to the final round.
The timing of the third round will be confirmed by the Chairman of the WTO General Board (New Zealand Ambassador David Walker, New Zealand Ambassador David Walker) after consultation with member states.
If no country expresses an objection without a separate voting procedure, the Secretary General is elected by the “agreement” method, which is considered consensual. Final results are expected to be confirmed by the end of October no later than November 7.
Meanwhile, this election came when former WTO Secretary General Roberto Azvedo resigned in early May, shortening his remaining term by one year.
