The ‘Abraham Agreement’ to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain was signed at the White House through US arbitration on the 15th (local time). 26 years have passed since Jordan in 1994 established diplomatic relations with the Arab countries. US President Donald Trump, who played a major role in signing the agreement, scored in the field of diplomacy before the November presidential election.

Yet Palestine, which is in conflict with Israel, is strongly opposed, and Iran, the enemy of the United States and the Islamic Sunnis, remains vigilant. Although the momentum for peace in the Middle East has been prepared, many believe that there is still a long way to go.

President Trump held a signing ceremony for the agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, and Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdulatif bin Rashid al Jayani, at the Southron White House. At the signing ceremony, agreements were signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Bahrain, respectively. President Trump attended and signed the event as a witness. The name of the agreement is derived from Abraham, the common ancestor of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. In a speech after the signing, President Trump said: “After decades of division and conflict, we are at the dawn of a new Middle East.” Prime Minister Netanyahu also expressed his expectation that “this peace will eventually spread to other Arab countries, and that the conflict between the Arabs and Israel will end completely.”

Under this agreement, the three countries plan to open an embassy and establish diplomatic and economic cooperation measures that include tourism, technology and energy. The United States’ New York Times (NYT) said: “We are on track to form a de facto alliance between Israel and the Sunni Gulf states to confront the common Shiite Islamic enemy Iran.” Some analyzes say that this agreement was possible because there was no war.

President Trump said he is also seeking peace accords between 5-6 countries and Israel. NYT said Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Oman were candidates. He also said in an interview with Fox News that he is willing to sell weapons sold to Israel to other countries in the Middle East. The sale in the United Arab Emirates of the F-35 stealth fighter was also discussed.

This diplomatic event is also expected to help President Trump’s presidential election strategy. Reuters reported that it would be an opportunity to strengthen the support of pro-Israeli Christian evangelical voters. NYT predicted that “events broadcast live on major broadcasters will be a political advantage for Trump in a vote with less than 50 days to go.” Sen. Mitt Romney, an anti-Trump Republican representative figure, made a statement saying, “I applaud the president and the administration.” Prime Minister Netanyahu, who was on the brink of firing on corruption charges, also suffered from domestic politics.

However, the road ahead of the Middle East is not only smooth. During the immediate signing ceremony, two Israeli residents were injured by a rocket fired from Gaza, Palestine. This was what Hamas, an armed group, did in protest against the agreement. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) also protested in a statement that it was “a dark day in history for the Palestinians” and that “only the end of Israel’s occupation will bring peace.”

There are also many other weaknesses. Israel promised to suspend the merger of occupied areas on the west bank of the Jordan River for this deal, but how long it will last is questionable, the Washington Post analyzed. It is also interesting how Iran will rebel against the agreement to besiege Iran, which is in conflict with the United States and its partners. In the United States, the controversy is expected to continue as the Democratic Party has shown an unacceptable position on the sale of the F-35 in the United Arab Emirates.

The WP reported that “the one-page description of the Abrahamic Agreement (West Bank) does not contain any arms mergers or sales, nor does the word ‘Palestine’ appear in the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.” The event alone was great, but the actual content of the deal was abstract and a warning that it could be broken at any moment.
