In connection with the suspicion of hiding a defect in BMW, which was a problem due to a series of car fires, the prosecution seized and searched the BMW Korea headquarters.
With the prosecution’s first forced investigation 11 months after the case was sent, attention is being drawn to whether the related investigation will be expedited.

[기자]In the summer of 2018, as the scorching heat increased, BMW’s diesel vehicles were engulfed in flames one after another.
It wasn’t until the endless fire was stigmatized as “fire tea” that BMW decided on a mass recall.
He argued that it was only recently confirmed that the exhaust gas recirculation system and EGR cooling water leaks were the cause.

Although BMW learned of the defect in 2015, it was determined to be hidden from consumers.

However, the prosecution’s investigation did not keep pace.
Since BMW is a German company, it is said to have had difficulty obtaining the necessary data.
In the end, the first seizure and search that took place 11 months after the case was sent.
The prosecution secured computer data related to the suspicion of hiding defects in BMW Korea headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, and the server storage in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
The investigation is led by Lee Dong-eon, the new head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office, Fifth Criminal Division, who previously served as the head of the International Criminal Division of the Ministry of Justice and was in charge of cooperation in criminal justice matters.
Prosecution officials predicted that since Lee was in charge of the case, it would be easy to obtain important data from abroad in the future.
In addition, he added that the investigation related to analyzing the data confiscated in Korea will be accelerated.
Separately, BMW owners have also filed a KRW 18 billion collective damages claim.
The prosecution’s investigation into the alleged concealment of defects is expected to have a direct impact on civil lawsuits, so it is noteworthy whether the speed of the prosecution’s investigation will seriously accelerate.
