A stepmother, who confined a 9-year-old boy to death in a suitcase, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for murder at trial. The reason the court was able to admit the stepmother’s charges was because there were statements from children who were the only witnesses in the case.
On the 16th, the sentencing of A (female, 41 years old), charged with murder and violation of the Child Welfare Law, was carried out in the first criminal division of the Cheonan Section of the Daejeon District Law (Judge Dae -won Chae). Deputy Judge Chae Dae-won, the presiding judge, sentenced A to 22 years in prison and explained the crime and the reasons for her sentence for 40 minutes. On June 1, Mr. A was charged with confining his cohabiting son, B (9), in his travel bag for more than 7 hours at his apartment in Cheonan City to die.
Based on the statements of Mr. A’s own children, the court refuted the crime that Mr. A did not admit to in court that day. Judge Chae said: “Mr. A stated that there was no fact that Army B ran over the bag that was confined. It seems to have run. “
At the time of the incident, there were only A and two biological children, so the witness statement was an important factor in the court’s judgment. Judge Chae also said: “The children informed Mr. A when they saw that there was no movement from Group B (in the bag),” Judge Chae said. “The children seem to be worried because they decided that Group B was in danger.
After listening to the children’s words, Mr. A spoke with an acquaintance for 40 minutes, and after that, he took the child out of his bag and performed CPR on him, and 119 was informed. Group B, who had been Trapped in a bag around 12 noon on June 1, he was found in cardiac arrest around 7:25 p.m. and taken to the hospital, but died of hypoxic brain injury on Day 3, two days later.
Mr. A also denied having blown hot air with a hair dryer into his suitcase. Mr. A said he “had air in Army B’s arm that came out of the bag.” In this regard, Judge Chae said: “If you look at the children’s statements and photographs, it is judged that (Mr. A) unzipped the suitcase and blew in the air for 30 seconds with a hair dryer.”
The judge, who had been explaining the reasons for the sentence for a long time, was unable to speak several times. Judge Chae said: “According to survivors, school teachers and neighbors, (Gun B) is a brilliant boy whose dream of being a police officer … I cried as I said. Judge Chae said: “Even with their last breath, Group B named Mr. A as their mother.”
Mr A submitted a reflection statement prior to the court ruling, but the court also raised questions about it. Judge Chae said: “Whenever (Group B) misbehaved, he tried to calm me down and punish me, but I was disappointed.” I wonder if I will regret it. “
Immediately after the sentencing, the family on the maternal side of Group B said: “I will come out of the closet in 22 years and I will live happily with my children.” “I killed (a child) anyway. It doesn’t make sense, ”he said.
