Tuna fishing boats were attacked in West African waters, about 200 kilometers south of Togo’s Lomé port.

The nationality of the attacked fishing vessel AP703 is Ghana.

It was known that 50 sailors were on board this ship, including two of Korean nationality.

The Foreign Ministry said the militants had transferred only Korean sailors to another ship and had fled to Nigeria.

48 Ghanaian sailors were found to be returning to Ghana aboard the ship they were on.

This area has been designated as a high risk maritime zone due to the frequent kidnapping of crews by pirates.

It covers an area of ​​323,000 square kilometers in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea near Benin, Cameroon and Togo, Nigeria, where 90% of all crew abductions have occurred in the last three years.

Although there are no Korean shipping companies in West African waters, 145 Korean sailors are believed to still be operating who have been employed by other shipping companies such as Ghana, Angola and Guinea.

Two months ago, on June 24, a fishing boat operating a tuna fishery 110 kilometers off the coast of Benin, West Africa, was attacked and five of our crew were kidnapped.

In May, our shrimp fishing sailor near Gabon was also kidnapped.

Five sailors kidnapped in Benin were released in 32 days and one in Gabon was released in southern Nigeria in 37 days.

The Foreign Ministry has announced that it will form an emergency response group and will work closely with authorities such as Ghana and Nigeria to dedicate all efforts to the release of the victims.
