On the 15th, the Seoul North District Prosecutor’s Office for the Crime of Women and Children (Deputy Prosecutor Yoo Chun-Yeol) announced that A (47), who stalked Pro Go Knight Jo for a year, was arrested on the day previous. Mr. A is suspected of violating laws (such as threats of retaliation), intrusion of buildings, defamation, and business interruption with respect to the aggravated punishment for certain crimes.
Mr. A, who was arrested as a current criminal by the police on the 24th of last month, was handed over to the prosecution in prison on the 28th of the same month. The prosecution said: “It was a matter of ongoing harassment for no specific reason.”
Prosecutors also called for the enactment of a bullying crime law. Under current law, simple stalking only applies misdemeanor penalties, and the punishment for offenders is limited to fines and arrests of less than 100,000 won. The prosecution said: “The ‘Stalking Crime Punishment Law’ focused on severe punishment and guaranteeing the human rights of victims must be enacted immediately.” Group 9 also raised a public request that bullying should be treated as a violent crime.
Meanwhile, at the 20th National Assembly, the “Special Law on Punishment of Crimes of Persistent Harassment, etc.” was launched, awaiting the criminal harasser in prison for three years or less, but it is pending.
