Seong Kim, Undersecretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Affairs, said the Biden administration has nothing more important than relations between Korea and Japan. Secretary Tony Blincoln said North Korea is a serious challenge and will respond by reestablishing its alliance. This is a report from the Washington correspondent, Taewook Kang. Undersecretary Seong Kim emphasized the importance of Korea-Japan relations in a security video seminar organized by the US Think Tank Institute for Strategic International Affairs. The Biden administration says it is committed to strengthening relationships between allies and alliances. He said that there is nothing more important than Japan and Korea. This reveals concerns about the negative impact that the long-term conflict between Korea and Japan may have on the US strategy in Northeast Asia. It is also interpreted as urging the improvement of relations between Korea and Japan. Deputy Under Secretary Kim said he will seek opportunities to expand cooperation in areas such as responding to the pandemic and climate change, and reinvigorate trilateral cooperation on North Korea’s challenges. In particular, he explained that he is discussing with Korea and Japan the ongoing policy review on North Korea and will continue to cooperate closely. Secretary Blincoln has identified North Korea as a serious challenge. He didn’t just point to North Korea, but made it clear that it is the next task after China. Secretary Blincoln said, “We are making great efforts now to reconnect with our allies” and repeatedly emphasized the restoration of the alliance as an important diplomatic task. The Biden administration views reestablishing the alliance as the most important task, so many times that State Department officials have emphasized it. As such, it appears that he will not hesitate to actively participate in the deteriorating Korea-Japan relationship. YTN Taewook Kang in Washington[[email protected]]is.
