[사회]’Sexual assault and harassment’ Kim Joon-ki, former Dongbu Group chairman, sentenced to two willful imprisonment, suspended

Former Dongbu Group Chairman Kim Joon-ki, who was handed over to trial for sexual assault on a domestic worker, was sentenced to probation even at the appeal trial.

As in the first trial, prison sentences were avoided for agreeing with the victims.

Former Dongbu Group Chairman Kim Joon-ki went to court to be sentenced to appeal.

Former President Kim has been tried on charges of sexual assault and harassment of a secretary multiple times from 2016 to the following year.

When asked if he had anything to say to the victims, he said nothing.

In 2017, when the controversy over sexual violence erupted, former President Kim fled abroad to receive treatment for a disease.

After staying in the US for two years avoiding investigations, I returned to Korea only after the passport was invalidated, Interpol Red applied for, and extradition filed.

Former President Kim was immediately arrested and handed over to trial, but was released after being sentenced to probation at the first trial.

The court admitted that former President Kim had committed sexual crimes by abusing his position, but did not sentence him to prison considering the agreement with the victims.

The judgment of the appeals court was no different.

The judge first pointed out that it was not very guilty for Kim to use his position to forcibly harass housekeepers and secretaries and commit adultery.

However, he agreed with the victims and said that the victims did not want punishment, and instead of imprisonment, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and four years of probation.

Both courts heard an amicable settlement with the victim based on the probation sentence, but former President Jeong Jak Kim appeared to deny the charges during the first and second trials.

They mentioned that they had the consent of the victims, while others avoided responsibility because they were old and their memories were unclear.

There is criticism that the court is lagging behind in the social environment calling for serious sexual offenses as the court has re-sentenced probation to the chaebol chief’s power-type sex crimes.
