Apple, which is shaking up the global EV market, is reported to have recently stopped discussing EV cooperation with Nissan. Earlier, the Wall Street Journal of the United States (WSJ) reported that Japanese automaker Nissan has expressed interest in cooperating with Apple’s electric vehicle project.

The UK’s Financial Times (FT) on the 15th (hereafter local time) recently discussed Nissan’s interest in production cooperation for Apple’s electric car called ‘i-car’ with Apple, but disagreements over the brand . Reported that the negotiations were stopped without being overcome.

However, FT said that the discussion between Apple and Nissan did not advance to senior management, and that “the contact between the two parties was very simple.”

Major foreign media such as Bloomberg News have named five companies, including Korea’s Hyundai and Kia Motors, Japan’s Nissan and Taiwan’s Foxconn, as Apple’s electric car production partners. Among the five companies, WSJ expressed interest in cooperating with the production of ‘Ika’ and ranked Nissan as the most likely candidate for serious discussions with Apple.

In this regard, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said at the performance presentation on the 9th, “We must pursue new initiatives” and “We will cooperate with companies with deep knowledge and experience through partnerships.”

At the time, WSJ interpreted that although it could not confirm whether the talks between Apple and Nissan were actually taking place, Nissan was willing to cooperate with Apple’s electric vehicle project.

In addition, quoting Smart Karma Research researcher Mio Kato, he brought to the fore the production capacity of Nissan’s US factory, adding that “(Nissan) is the most likely candidate to seriously discuss with Apple.”

The news of the suspension of discussions between Apple and Nissan came a week after Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors announced that discussions related to Apple cars, which had been raised since earlier this year through public disclosure, were halted. At the time, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors announced that “discussions on autonomous vehicle development with Apple are not progressing.”

On the other hand, some pointed out whether Apple is making unreasonable demands on automakers when Apple stopped even arguing with Nissan, which showed its willingness to cooperate with the production of Icar. This point is also supported by the fact that the main reason for the cessation of this discussion is the use of the ‘Apple’ brand.

In this regard, the automotive industry has reported that Apple will not share technology while promoting the production of electric vehicles.
