Ministry of Industry “Promotion of R&D on a large scale to use raw materials and ecological fuels”
The petrochemical industry, which emits the second largest greenhouse gas among national manufacturing industries, has rallied for ‘carbon neutrality by 2050’. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy announced on the 9th that SK’s Environmental Science and Technology Research Institute held the ‘Zero Carbon Petrochemical Committee Inauguration Ceremony’ to promote carbon neutrality and strengthen public-private communication.
The event was attended by leading companies, academics and experts from petrochemical naphtha cracking (NCC) facilities, including SK Global Chemical, Hanwha Total Petrochemical, Lotte Chemical, LG Chem and Yeocheon NCC, including Dong-jun Moon, President of the Association Korea Petrochemical. (President of Kumho Petrochemical).
Deputy Minister Park Jin-gyu of the Ministry of Industry said: “It is urgent to develop green manufacturing technology that can use hydrogen, carbon, bio and renewable energy as raw materials and fuels more than other industries.” Said.
Petrochemicals emit about 71 million tons of greenhouse gases per year and, among national manufacturing industries, it is the second largest greenhouse gas emitting sector after steel. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is generated in the process of burning gas derived from the pyrolysis process of naphtha, a raw material, as fuel.
On this day, the companies announced and shared the status of the carbon neutrality promotion.
LG Chem declared the industry’s first ‘carbon neutral growth 2050’ in July last year and plans to promote RE100 (a campaign to cover 100% of electricity used with renewable energy) for all commercial sites.
Lotte Chemical, which declared ‘2030 carbon neutral growth’, announced a 6 trillion won growth target in the organic sector by 2030.
SK Global Chemical will expand the share of green products to more than 70% by 2025, and Yeocheon NCC plans to invest in continuous improvement of facilities and processes for energy efficiency.
Hanwha Total Petrochemical is reviewing detailed implementation plans in line with France Total’s Net Zero Statement 2050.
The industry suggested to the government that it is necessary to expand support for R&D and deduct the investment tax to preventively introduce expansion technologies for fuels and petrochemical raw materials, which are still in the R&D stage. In addition, he requested that companies selected as excellent workplaces for participating in the “voluntary system of energy efficiency targets” expand incentives such as tax cuts.
Meanwhile, Vice Minister Park Jin-gyu from the Ministry of Industry visited Korea’s first research and development site for waste plastic pyrolysis oil at SK Innovation Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, toured the prototype production facility of pyrolysis oil and examined R&D trends. On site, SK Global Chemical President Na Gyeong-soo and SK Innovation Lee Seong-joon President of Institute of Environmental Science and Technology participated and introduced pyrolysis technology and pyrolysis prototype production facilities.
