In the News Reporter Kwon Ji-young ㅣ Recently, as Apple and Hyundai Motor Group have gained attention as the fact of cooperation in the development of autonomous electric vehicles, the main foreign media are making mixed remarks on the possibility of cooperation.

In the Bloomberg case, Apple and Hyundai reported that they had stopped discussing the development of the ‘Apple Car’, while the Wall Street Journal reported that “Kia Motors is ready for production.” Earlier, CNBC announced that “Apple and Hyundai-Kia Motors are in the final stages of discussing the development of the ‘Apple Car’.”

Bloomberg News reported on the 5th (local time), citing various sources, saying: “Apple recently temporarily suspended inquiries on consignment production of ‘Apple Cars’ that have been held with Hyundai Motor Group.” The sources, who requested anonymity, said: “Apple is discussing similar plans with other automakers besides Hyundai and Kia.”

Negotiations reportedly stalled when Apple protested Hyundai Motor Group’s approval of some of its electric vehicle project negotiations.

At present, it is known that it is unclear when negotiations between the two sides will resume. Additionally, there is controversy within the Hyundai Motor Company over whether to participate in Apple’s car project, Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg predicts that if negotiations are resumed, the Kia Motors plant in Georgia, USA, will likely produce Apple cars.

By contrast, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported earlier that morning, “Kia Motors has contacted potential partners for the assembly and production of Apple automobiles at a plant in Georgia, United States.”

According to WSJ, Hyundai Motor Company is discussing plans to start producing Apple cars from 2024 already at Kia by investing $ 3 billion (approximately 3.4 trillion won) in negotiations with Apple.

According to foreign media, Apple is conducting negotiations on Apple cars with other automakers in addition to Hyundai Motor Company. Similar negotiations are known to be taking place with six major Japanese automakers, including Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi.

Previously, the US economic outlet CNBC reported that Apple is in the final stages of negotiations with Hyundai and Kia. However, the media said that the actual production of Apple cars could be delayed further than in 2024, and that there is a possibility that other automakers besides Hyundai and Kia will participate in the negotiation stage.

Apple is known to want to control not only software but also hardware in the development of this autonomous electric vehicle. According to CNBC, Apple cars are predicted not to be the way to install Apple software on Kia models.
