With over 1,000 confirmed cases of a new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) linked to the East Seoul Detention Center, the ‘detention center’ shows no signs of fading.
Following the announcement of additional measures by the Ministry of Justice late last year, Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae announced an apology for the first time on 1 and 2, and took action, but the fifth total inspection continued to confirm numbers of three digits.

The first confirmation of the eastern detention center came on November 27. An employee was infected by his family. From then until the 16th of last month, 17 people were confirmed, including 16 employees and a prison inmate.
When the first confirmed cases were released, the Ministry of Justice only conducted diagnostic tests focused on employees and contacts. As the number of confirmed cases continued to rise from day 14, about 15 days later, a full examination was performed only on day 18.
The total number of confirmed cases at the Dongbu Detention Center confirmed in the first and second comprehensive examinations was 475, and some 2,500 prisoners are known to have been tested. It means that 2 out of 10 are confirmed.
As a result of the first full inspection, 185 inmates and two employees were confirmed, and the second result was 298 prisoners and two employees. In the third test, 233 additional prisoners were confirmed and 139 in the fourth test.
As the situation grew, Vice Minister of Justice Yong-gu Lee made his first apology on the 31st of last month. It was 34 days after the first confirmed case. The Justice Ministry admitted some criticism of the procrastination response and announced additional measures, including the application of three steps to social distancing for all correctional facilities, but the triple-digit confirmation continued in the subsequent fourth full inspection.

For the measures proposed by the Ministry of Justice to be effective, it seems that it is necessary to quarantine unconfirmed people as soon as possible.
As 121 confirmed cases were added that day, 730 confirmed cases are currently being held at the Dongbu Detention Center. It is almost half of the total number of 1700 people.
Although some have been transferred to the North Gyeongsangbuk-do Second Prison and Seoul South Prison, etc., there are continuous cases of confirmed cases in the East Detention Center, so the transfer of the remaining unconfirmed is also urgent.
The Ministry of Justice plans to transfer unconfirmed persons from the Eastern Detention Center to another correctional facility as soon as possible. However, a Justice Ministry official said: “We are unable to inform you of the date and institution regarding the transfer, and we plan to disclose it after the transfer is completed.”
He said: “(The sixth total inspection of the Eastern Detention Center) will be decided in consultation with the quarantine authorities,” he said. “It will take some time to review the results of the fifth full inspection, as it has been shortly after.”
Meanwhile, as the number of confirmed cases increased by 125 on this day, the number of confirmed corona19 in correctional facilities across the country rose to 1108. Of these, 14 employees, 3 inmates and 4 inmates were released from the quarantine.
