India, a ‘population powerhouse’, has also approved the use of a new vaccine against coronavirus infection (Corona 19) by a multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca following the UK and others, Reuters reported, citing authorities officials. on day 1.

The Indian pharmaceutical authorities reportedly decided to approve the emergency use of the Corona 19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca in the UK.

On the same day, a panel of experts from the Central Pharmaceutical Standards Administration of India (CDSCO) held a meeting on the approval of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

India’s NDTV also reported that the panel recommended CDSCO for urgent use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Based on the results of this meeting, the Indian authorities make a final decision on the introduction of drugs such as vaccines.

This is the first time that Corona 19 vaccine has been approved for use in India.

The countries that approved the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine before India were the United Kingdom, Argentina and El Salvador.

In India, the local pharmaceutical company Serum Institute (SII), the world’s largest vaccine company, has been conducting clinical trials of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The SII is known to have already produced 50 million inoculations in preparation for approval.

The SII plans to increase production to 100 million batches per month by March.

AstraZeneca vaccine is a ‘carrier (vector) vaccine’ made by placing some of the antigenic genes that cause disease in a virus that is harmless to the human body.

The principle of inducing an immune response is different from that of the Pfizer or Modena vaccine developed using the “messenger ribonucleic acid” (mRNA, messenger RNA) that contains the genetic information of the virus.

The average immunological effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine is 70.4%, lower than that of Pfizer (95%) and Modena (94.5%).

Participants who first administered half the dose of the vaccine first and a full dose one month later had a prophylactic effect of 90%, and those who received the full dose of both doses were 62%.

However, compared to the other two vaccines, the price is cheaper and the distribution is convenient, for example, it can be stored in a general refrigerator (2-8 ℃).

Currently, in India, three companies, including SII, an Indian pharmaceutical company Barat Biotech and Pfizer, have applied to the Indian authorities for the urgent use of the vaccine.

India plans to start vaccinating sooner or later depending on approval.

The number of priority vaccination targets set by the Indian government is about 300 million people, including medical personnel, police, soldiers, and people aged 50 and over.

On the other hand, the cumulative number of confirmed corona 19 cases in India was 1,286,709 (according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) that day, an increase of 235 over the previous day.

The number of new confirmed cases per day, which reached 100,000 in September, has recently dropped to around 20,000.
