Some detainees can’t even write outside
All “confirmation days out of office” text notifications
“Don’t even tell my family, frustration and anger”
“If something happens, you have to tell your family. What if you die like this?”
Families of those detained at the East Detention Center in Seoul, where a slew of new coronavirus (Corona 19) infections have been confirmed, express their frustration with the ‘dark administration’. Some families are expressing their anger at the news that even detainees in urgent need of hospital treatment are being neglected while information inside the detention center is unknown.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 30th, there were 792 confirmed cases of Corona 19 related to the Oriental Detention Center at 0 o’clock that day. Among them, 771 prisoners (including prisoners) were arrested and 21 employees of the detention center. Of the 771 prisoners who were confirmed confirmed, 345 were transferred to the second prison in North Gyeongsang Province in Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 28th.
As the number of confirmed cases increases, the inmates at the eastern detention center are living in extreme anxiety. The visits were suspended and the letters were not sent correctly, so they were virtually disconnected from the outside world. Families only access information through media reports and cannot help detainees, so they fight with their feet.
Fallen letters … Families, prisoners do not know their health
Earlier this month, A (56), incarcerated in Dongbu Detention Center, was transferred to Cheongsong. Mr. A’s family has nothing to know except that he was transferred on the 28th after he was diagnosed with Corona 19 on the 21st of this month. Mr. A’s wife, Immo (49), said: “My husband wrote a letter every day, but the last time I received a letter on the 17th, I still have not received a letter.” Isn’t it a violation? He exclaimed.
The most recent news that Mr. Lim heard from Mr. A was that the detainees were anxious due to the spread of Corona 19, targeting the detention center staff. In a letter, Mr. A wrote: “I cannot take my mask off for 24 hours because I think the staff will catch Corona 19 and spread it. I am anxious because other people are transferring it.” Mr. A said that prior to the rapid spread of Corona 19, prisoners were not provided with masks, so they purchased and wore a separate mask.
The family asked the detention center to explain Mr. A’s state of health, but the detention center only replied that he was “treating well” without asking who the interrogator was. I replied, “Even though it’s a family, I can’t tell you because it’s personal information and they treat me the same way as outside, so I’m just telling you not to worry.”
The silent and silent response of the detention center despite the bleeding
Family members of B (39) waiting at the East Detention Center after receiving a negative Corona 19 test are also frustrated. Mr. B, in particular, had a miscarriage during his incarceration and recommends surgery at the hospital. However, in the meantime, the spread of Corona 19 within the detention center has made it impossible to do this or that. Although she complained of pain due to the aftermath of the miscarriage, the reality is that she cannot receive proper treatment, much less surgery. However, B’s relatives are prohibited from visiting and cannot interview lawyers, so they have nothing to know or do.
Mr B’s husband, an aunt (56), said: “My wife is bleeding and complains of pain every day, and there is no answer when I call the detention center.” said. He said, “In this case, you may not be able to conceive for your entire life, but shouldn’t we have to have surgery?”
