UK mutations are ‘multiple mutations’ … “More powerful mutations may appear”

On the appearance of the mutant virus Corona 19 that originated in the United Kingdom, the scientific and medical world says that it was “sufficiently predicted”. The virus had to change even for its own survival. He warns that if so many countries can infect so many patients, it could be more dangerous after this winter.

Summing up the words of the experts on the 28th, the possibility that an additional mutant corona 19 virus with strong transmission power cannot be ruled out in the future. Another more powerful mutant virus could appear outside of the UK or South Africa that has been identified. The fact that the UK mutant virus has a higher degree of mutation than existing mutant viruses known to date also contributes to this prediction.

According to the international journal ‘Science’ and foreign media, around 20 mutations were found in the mutant virus originating in the United Kingdom. Scientists are paying particular attention to the three mutations (N501Y, P681H, deletion 69-70) in which the amino acid, which is a constituent unit of the protein, has been changed or separated. This is because these mutations can change the avidity, activity, and structure of the spike protein, which is essential when the virus enters the host cell. Therefore, the British mutant virus has 1.7 times more transmission power than the existing virus.

The same goes for the mutant virus, which quarantine authorities said it confirmed in three family members who came from the UK that day. Kim Eun-jin, Head of Test Analysis Team 1 at Central Defense Response Headquarters, explained: “As a result of the test, multiple mutations found in the British variant of the virus were observed.”

This is not the first time that a virus with mutations in the spike protein has appeared. The Corona 19 virus, which was prevalent in Korea in the early days, was classified into groups S and V. However, after the Itaewon club epidemic in Seoul in May, the type of Corona 19 virus that has established itself in Korea was ‘GH’. Since it became a virus that penetrates better into host cells, the GH group type became the dominant species, outnumbering the S and V groups.

This UK variation was classified into the GR group, different from the GH group. So far, the GR group type has only been introduced to some foreign participants, such as the Russian sailors in Busan. However, it is spreading to more than 20 countries around the world, and if it spreads to this point, it is very likely that GR Group will become mainstream in the future.

Of interest is the impact of vaccines that have already started or developments in antibody therapeutics that are nearing the end. The greater the change, the less effective the existing vaccine or antibody treatment will be. Also, as time passes after vaccination, the number of people whose immunity remains inadequate can result in more mutations showing persistent vitality. A professor of microbiology at a Seoul university said: “The most worrying point is that it is difficult to predict how the mutant virus pattern will develop in the future.”
