The cumulative number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in the East Seoul Detention Center increased to 515. Of the confirmed cases, 376 are collectively transferred to a prison in Cheongsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and will be treated in a private room until healed.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 28th, the number of confirmed patients in the Dongbu Detention Center at 0am on the same day was 488 prisoners, 21 employees and 6 prisoners. This is an increase of 5 people (4 interns and 1 employee) compared to the previous day.
The Dongbu Detention Center carried out a third full-time inspection of all employees and prisoners, except those with confirmed cases the day before. The test results were expected to be released as early as the afternoon of the day, but the Justice Ministry said it has not received any notification yet.
According to prison authorities, 376 of the confirmed patients at the East Detention Center were transferred to the second prison in North Gyeongsang Province (also known as Cheongsong Prison) this morning. The transport targets were asymptomatic and mildly ill, and the underlying disease and the elderly remained in the East Detention Center.
All those transferred to Cheongsong Prison are held alone and returned to Dongbu Detention Center after being diagnosed with a cure. The Ministry of Justice previously transferred approximately 470 of the existing prisoners across the country in order to turn 500 private rooms at Cheongsong Prison into a vital treatment center for prisoners.
Cheongsong Prison plans to mobilize 14 medical staff (5 doctors and 9 nurses) and about 200 employees on campus for intensive treatment. Regarding the concerns of local residents, the Justice Ministry emphasized the position that “we will completely cut off the spread of the community.”
The eastern detention center was out of breath due to large-scale transportation. 51 out of 400 employees were predicted to be in self-quarantine, which could lead to an anomaly in security work, but the number of inmates that day dropped dramatically, reducing concerns about a gap in management.
An official from the Ministry of Justice explained: “We believe that the number of employees in the eastern detention center is sufficient, as most of the confirmed cases have been transferred. We will decide on the need to send employees from other facilities and change to the third subsidiary system “.
Excluding the 376 people who were transferred, 112 confirmed patients remained at the East Detention Center due to reasons such as underlying illness and old age. The detention center is considering a plan to request the suspension of the execution of the sentence or the execution of the detention for some of these prisoners while they are in internal treatment.
The Ministry of Justice has extended the quarantine period for new prisoners from the previous two weeks to three weeks from the 23rd to block the entry of COVID-19 from new prisoners. In the case of the voice from behind, measures such as quarantine release were prepared.
In this regard, the prison headquarters recently sent an official letter to the Ministry of Justice in which it said: “We plan to refuse to accept the person infected with corona 19 or to suggest the suspension of the execution of the sentence.” Please take active steps to prevent this from happening. “
Meanwhile, it was confirmed that former President Lee Myung-bak, who was incarcerated in the East Detention Center, was hospitalized at Seoul National University Hospital last week for medical treatment related to chronic diseases. He is expected to decide whether to return to the detention center after completing the examination and examination later this month. However, there is a possibility that former President Lee’s period of hospitalization will be prolonged as the detention center is minimizing the external influx due to mass infection.
