Another courier worker died.
It is the sixteenth death this year.
The courier union and the grieving family said they had been overworked enough to lose 20 kg in 6 months.
Countermeasures have emerged to avoid overworking courier workers, and courier companies have promised to reduce the amount of labor, but voices are loud that they are not being properly maintained.
Let’s find out more from the reporter. Reporter Kim Ji-hwan!
Another unfortunate death occurred, so let’s explain the death first.
[기자]Yes, it was around 9 a.m. yesterday that 34-year-old LOTTE courier driver Park Mo was found dead.
The place where he died was Park’s home in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do.
I didn’t go to work and couldn’t get in touch, so a colleague went home and found him.
Police said there were no signs of murder or suicide as a result of the CCTV investigation of the house and building.
Park is believed to have died in his sleep and is investigating the exact cause and time of death.
[앵커]The courier union also immediately held a press conference, saying that Mr. Park was overworked.
[기자]If it is.
The courier union insisted that Mr. Park was led into a truly criminal robbery.
He added that he suffered from working from 2 to 3 p.m. every day, such as going to work at 6 in the morning and usually working until 9-10 at night.
They also said that on average, up to 380 units were delivered per day.
Park emphasized that he lost 20 kg at his new weight in just six months due to overwork.
Let’s hear it for yourself.
In particular, Lotte Courier promised to inject 1,000 sorters two months ago as a measure to improve the work environment for courier workers.
He criticized that there was not a single classifier at the Sejong agency in Gwonseon, Suwon, where Park worked.
[앵커]YTN also interviewed the grieving family, and the bereaved also said that Park had been struggling.
[기자]Yes, Mr. Park’s mother passed her heart on to YTN.
According to his mother, Park initially worked as a delivery boy to provide food to a restaurant, but quit after the situation worsened due to Corona 19.
The job I got last July was a courier driver.
Every time she called him, he complained that he had a lot of work, so he said it was enough to recommend that his family quit.
Let’s listen for a second.
He said there was no chronic illness or pain.
Colleagues gave similar testimony.
In particular, when looking at the SNS messages exchanged with a colleague last week, Mr. Park mentioned that around 6:30 pm, he is still delivering more than 300 packages today.
A coworker said it was fast, and said there are still a hundred left, and said he would only leave work at 11pm
[앵커]The union, the grieving family and even colleagues say they are overworked. What is Lotte Courier’s position?
[기자]He refuted that it was not overwork.
It was revealed that the delivery volume and departure time known to the company are slightly different from what the union claimed.
First, Lotte Courier claimed that Park delivered an average of 200 to 250 units per day from July through this month.
It was a normal workload with no significant differences from other courier drivers.
He said that the contents of the classification staff are also different from the facts.
Initially, it was revealed that the policy was to put 1,000 classified employees on shifts after discussion with the agency board and the union.
He explained that he currently has four or five classification personnel, and after seeing the results of their operation, he will decide which terminal and how many people to put in it.
In other words, as the union said, it is not that the labor classification has not been put in at all, but that it takes time to do so in turn.
He added that since the police decided to carry out the autopsy, if the exact cause of death is found, we will propose the corresponding measures and compensation.
[앵커]Sixteen courier workers died this year alone, but the environment hasn’t changed significantly, so voices about the enactment of the courier law are increasing.
[기자]Yes, while the regrettable deaths of the messengers continued, what the alternate law is doing, that voice came out several times.
The Living Logistics Services Industry Development Law, the so-called parcel delivery law, has been proposed three times since the last XX National Assembly, but was once abolished.
Courier service providers were ordered to avoid overworking courier workers, standard contracts were introduced, and worker shelters were installed.
The enactment was not easy because companies other than courier workers and the freight delivery industry also opposed.
In the XXI National Assembly, commercial operators and freight transport companies also favored each other, increasing the possibility of passing through the interim National Assembly.
However, in the interest discussion process, the content of the sorting operation is omitted and the courier worker still has to pay for the cost of the lost or damaged items.
Since the environment does not change easily, there is a voice that the law must be passed even with the proposed content, and the implementing decree and rules must be further modified.
