From yesterday morning until afternoon, 19 Chinese and Russian military aircraft crossed the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone, Cádiz.
Forces from both China and Russia conducted joint exercises in the East Sea, and it is unusual for so many Sino-Russian military aircraft to enter Cádiz without permission.
Let’s find out what it means by connecting journalists with the Ministry of Defense. Reporter Kim Moon-kyung!
First, let’s look at the situation yesterday.
When did Chinese-Russian military planes enter Cádiz without permission?
[기자]First, I will explain the video posted by the Russian Defense Ministry.
This is a display launched yesterday by Sino-Russian military aircraft after completing combined training in the East Sea. If you look at the screen, you can see Chinese and Russian military aircraft, and it is presumed to be a scene where they are training in the East Sea.
This is a video taken by the Russian Air Force, showing a Chinese H-6K bomber flying close to the Sukhoi fighter.
Previously, Chinese military aircraft began to enter without authorization, followed by Russian military aircraft.
Even shortly after 8 a.m., Chinese military planes arrived from the west, and Russian planes reached the East Sea after a while.
This means that they entered Cádiz from the south and northeast of the Korean peninsula, respectively.
The military said that the time when these military planes withdrew completely from Cádiz was around 3:20 p.m.
I didn’t stay in Cádiz for more than 7 hours and the situation kept going in and out.
Military officials said they appear to have entered the ROK air defense identification zone about 10 times.
[앵커]If so, what type of military aircraft entered and how did it enter Cádiz without permission?
[기자]There were 19 in total, mostly bombers from both countries capable of flying long distances.
China had four H-6 bombers at the helm, and Russia had 15 Tupolev Tu-95 series bombers, Sukhoi fighter jets, and 15 A-50 early warning and control aircraft targeting Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
It is a bomber that represents both countries and is classified as a strategic bomber because it can carry nuclear weapons.
In Russia, Sukhoi fighters have also entered the fray, but they don’t seem to stick around for long due to flight distance restrictions.
Military officials said some Russian bombers were known to have descended further south from Ieodo and then returned north.
[앵커]Some of the Sino-Russian military aircraft that entered this way are said to have been trained in the East Sea. How did you find out?
[기자]Early in the morning, even if you were entering Cádiz from the west, two of the four headed straight northeast.
This Chinese bomber was heading east of Ulleungdo.
When the Chinese bombers headed north, this time the Russian bombers and fighters headed south.
Similarly, it was confirmed that they flew to the vicinity of Ulleungdo and Dokdo, met with Chinese bombers and conducted joint exercises.
Military officials said that the combined training of Russian and Chinese military aircraft was a joint air-to-air patrol, which was a training to strengthen the interaction between China and Russia and enhance the joint action capability.
[앵커]We used the expression “unauthorized entry” previously. How did our response to the entry process to the Sino-Russian military aircraft come about?
[기자]Cádiz, as is known, is not airspace.
Consequently, we use the term “unauthorized entry” instead of “trespassing.”
If so, it is not airspace, but the key is why you need permission to enter.
Cádiz is an abbreviation in English for the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone and, as the name suggests, it is a military term.
This air defense identification zone is adopted by most countries not only in Korea, but also in Northeast Asia, such as China, Japan, and Taiwan.
As a kind of security device to avoid conflicts between the military authorities of the two countries, it is mandatory to seek understanding in advance if possible, but not to enter the air defense identification area on the other side.
It’s kind of an international standard.
Also, I said it was a must, but since it is not our airspace, there is no disadvantage even if you do not notify in advance, and you cannot use force to force you to vacate.
However, when a Russian military plane invaded Dokdo airspace in July last year, the Korean Air Force fired a warning fire and dislodged it.
This time, since it is not an invasion of airspace, the only thing our Air Force can respond to is a blockade maneuver, or tactical action, to avoid entering Cádiz without permission.
[앵커]If so, how are the training objectives evaluated? It seems that it will have to be seen as a conscious movement of the United States.
[기자]Experts are analyzing that it seems that during the period of the American regime change, the focus was on joint training between the Russian military authorities.
In particular, it was confirmed that some of the Russian bombers headed further south to Ieodo and then headed north.
This is also analyzed as a measure directed at the conflict between the United States and China in the South China Sea.
Among these is also the responsive nature of joint training between the United States and Japan.
On the 16th, two US Air Force B-1B Lancers strategic bombers, called the Death Swans, conducted joint training with Japan Air Force Self-Defense fighters in the Sea of East.
At that time, it is known that the military authorities of the United States and Japan mobilized 15 F-15 and F-2 fighters belonging to the Self-Defense Forces in addition to the B-1B strategic bombers for combined exercises carried out in the East Sea, Mar of East China and the seas of Okinawa.
On the 4th, two weeks earlier, the United States also conducted joint exercises with Japan using B-1B bombers.
The problem is our soldiers, because while these countries are conducting joint training, if a situation occurs that invades the airspace like last year, accidental situations can arise.
North Korea’s winter training is also underway, and it appears to be facing a situation that increases the load as it is necessary to keep an eye on the movements of the Chinese military authorities in the future.
The Foreign Ministry yesterday expressed regret to China and Russia and called for a relapse.
However, China and Russia’s Pentagon said it was a regular patrol flight, while the US State Department made a control move, emphasizing that it would halt attempts to destabilize the region.
