Self-designed battery to increase mileage is the key
Even Tesla has 17 years to benefit … Pay attention to whether Apple’s challenge will be fluid
Reuters reported on the 21st (local time), citing anonymous sources, that Apple, the telecommunications giant that makes iPhones, is entering the autonomous vehicle market.
Apple is reportedly aiming to produce autonomous passenger cars by 2024.
However, sources said that production could be boosted after 2025 as a result of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
Within Apple, a vehicle project called ‘Project Titan’ has been in operation since 2014.
However, Reuters explained that after the company has focused on other fields such as software for a while, the vehicle project has made progress again since last year.
One official said a self-designed battery is the core of Apple’s vehicle business.
Apple came up with a design to increase the capacity of the battery cells and add more active material rather than removing the bag and module.
The official explains that this can increase the mileage of the vehicle.
He added that he is also working on a way to make lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that are less likely to overheat than lithium-ion batteries.
It is known that Apple has decided to purchase some parts, such as LiDAR sensors (LiDAR technology that detects the distance to surrounding objects with light) to be installed in vehicles.
For now, Apple is anticipated to cooperate with manufacturers to assemble vehicles, and there is a possibility that Apple will develop only a self-driving system that can be mounted in the cars of existing vehicle manufacturers, authorities said.
Although Apple produces hundreds of millions of electronic products a year, vehicle manufacturing, a representative general industry, is expected to be a difficult task for Apple considering its complex supply chain.
Reuters explained that to benefit from the vehicle business, it must have the capacity to produce more than 100,000 units a year.
As it took Tesla 17 years to generate stable profits from vehicle manufacturing, it is noted that Apple’s challenge may not be easy.
