Genesis introduced the GV70, a mid-size luxury sports utility vehicle. The design exceeded expectations and received high expectations from consumers, but the price for a full option of 75 million won was heard. The GV70 that I met in person was a vehicle that could get enough satisfaction without spending up to 75 million won.
On the 15th I met Genesis GV70 at Starfield Hanam, Gyeonggi-do. The vehicle we actually looked at was a combination of sporty design, roomy space, and explosive performance. The design fell short of being well received.
Genesis’ unique shield-shaped crest grille stands out proudly, while the slightly shorter two-row quad lamps reveal simple elegance. The sporty design of the bumper hinted at the high performance of the car.

Smooth design with no regrets … ‘Satisfaction’
However, compared to other vehicles, the GV70 was particularly concise and beautiful. This is due to the lack of dividing lines (divided boundaries on the exterior of the vehicle) on the hood. The dividing line drawn between the grille and the hood is a factor that undermines the integrity of the car’s design.
Avante is representative. There is a modern emblem on the grille and the parting line is immediately exposed. I thought it would have been more complete if the emblem was changed to a dark chrome color and placed on the grille and the parting line removed so that the grille and the end of the hood meet. The GV70 has the effect of sporting a neat and longer bonnet through such shape.

The slim sidelines and neat rear ends that create a coupe feel are also satisfying. In particular, the long slim quad lamp at the rear plays a key role. The license plate and turn signals lowered to the bumper position are the factors that make the rear end look cleaner. It shares a platform with the G70 sports sedan, but the GV70 has a more relaxed interior space. In both the front and rear seats, there is enough room to put a fist on the knee. The luggage space was also 622 liters, so I have no regrets.
The interior interior was similar to the existing Genesis vehicle, but it felt cuter. The steering wheel had the same feel as the existing car, and it had a 14.5-inch main display and a round shift dial that glows with light.
Considering that the overall width is narrower than that of semi-large vehicles like the G80 and GV80, the central fascia has become more intuitive and compact, and the wireless charger has entered the vertical depth. Thanks to this, I didn’t feel like the space was much smaller than the GV80. The rear seats are also provided with heated cables and ventilated seats to improve usability like a family car.

Engine and exhaust sound reveals sporty personality
When I started driving, I could feel the sporty texture. GV70 offers a total of 4 driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Sport and Custom. At the time of departure, it was set to eco mode, but it was possible to drive smoothly and powerfully. The GV70 is powered by three engines: 2.5 turbo petrol, 3.5 turbo and 2.2 diesel. The test drive was a 3.5 turbo model with a maximum output of 380 hp and a maximum torque of 54.0 kgfm. Thanks to this, the eco mode also felt like the sporty comfort mode of a passenger car of the same class.
There was a slight noise in eco mode. When I changed the drive mode to Comfort in the car I was concerned about, the subtle noise changed to clearer sounds from the engine and exhaust. Even in eco mode, the sound of the engine and the sound of the exhaust were subtly heard. When I increased speed, the GV70 got colder and the seats tightened and kept the body stable.
When switching to sports mode while heading to Seorak IC on Seoul’s Yangyang Expressway, the sound of the exhaust increased and the output increased noticeably. As I stepped on the pedal deeply, the digital cluster speed needle went up horribly as the price of bitcoin soared. I had to take my foot off the pedal immediately because I accidentally crossed the speed limit.

The semi-autonomous driving technology is also top-notch. Highway Driving Assistance II (HDA II) and navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) continued to read lanes and distances to assist with steering and speed. If you are a driver who does not change lanes frequently on the highway and drives safely, there are virtually no parts to operate directly.
The GV70, like the GV80, is also changing lanes on its own. When the turn signal is turned on while the semi-autonomous driving function is on, the vehicle detects the safe distance by itself and changes lanes. However, if you are a driver with an urgent personality, it is faster to do it yourself.
Full option 75.5 million won? Should I take it all to feel relieved?
The main reason consumers complain about the GV70 is its price. The ‘full option’ price that adds all the specifications of the GV70 is known to be 75.5 million won. It is also compared to the Porsche Macan Can midsize SUV (74 million won). Some say it is nicknamed ‘Chhosun Macan’ because of its excellent design or because the price is similar.
The test drive was a 72.2 million won vehicle, which added various specs to the 3.5 turbo model. In the full option, only the sports package is missing which includes an electronic LSD for 3 million won, a Sport-Plus mode, and a sports bumper and wheels, etc., but even if you don’t take all this, you will feel relieved.

The more I drove, the more satisfaction I got from the GV70, but the idea of ’overpec’ soon came up. Even lower performance is expected to provide sufficient satisfaction for all drivers. The fuel economy of the 3.5T AWD model, which did not exceed 5-6 km / L during the test drive, is also onerous in everyday life.
Pricing for the GV70 2.5 Turbo model starts at 48.8 million won. As the ‘Your Genesis’ program is applied, which freely selects and adds the desired specifications, there is no option that cannot be selected as a submodel. Genesis explains that if you add a package that combines △ all-wheel drive △ 19-inch wheels and tires △ head-up display (HUD) and advanced safe-driving features to the 2.5 turbo, that would be 58.2 million won.
However, if you’re traveling in the city, you don’t necessarily need four-wheel drive. Rather, it is more efficient to increase the wheels and tires to 21 inches and choose the electronic preview control suspension included on the 21-inch wheels. In this case, the price of the vehicle will be reduced to 56 million won.
If you want Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on the same level as the full option, you can add the Driving Assistance Package2. The price of the vehicle goes up slightly to 57.5 million won, but it creates an excellent driving environment and is cheaper than the 70 million won of imported canned cars, which are rarely imported into Korea.
