The endangered Amur tiger (also known as the Baekdu mountain tiger) has been prowling private homes in Russia to hunt cattle.
Local wildlife protection authorities have decided to capture the object for fear of further damage.
According to the tiger research group ‘Amur Tiger Center’ (hereinafter referred to as the Center), on the 18th, an Amur tiger attacked and killed a dog in a private house in a village in the Dalenechinsk region in north of the maritime province earlier this month.
The wildlife protection authorities explained that there are a number of cases in which dogs raised in private homes were killed in the attack by the Amur tiger in various parts of the northern coastal region.
Based on this, wildlife protection authorities estimated that an Amur tiger repeatedly appeared in private homes and hunted livestock.
Although Amur tigers attacked residents and caused no damage, the center said wildlife protection authorities decided to capture the object safely to avoid further damage to livestock.
Once captured, the entity is protected in the center for a time.
This is not the first time in Russia’s Far East that an Amur tiger has appeared in a private home and attacked livestock.
In early June, an Amur tiger attacked two cows in a pasture in a village in the Pozarski region of the Northern Maritime Province.
Around the same time, in the vicinity of the Anuyski National Park in Khabarovsk, an Amur tiger looking for food attacked a horse farm and killed a foal.
At the time, experts emphasized that it was not common for Amur tigers to appear in private homes.
However, he explained that there are often cases where there is a shortage of food in the habitat.
Endangered by habitat destruction and reckless poaching, the Amur tiger is currently designated on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) ‘Red List’ and is receiving international protection.
The Amur tiger is known as the largest species of tiger on Earth.
The number of Amur tigers is only 560 to 600, of which 90% live in the Maritime Province and the Khabarovsk Province.
