The Ministry of the Environment announced on the 16th that “starting next year, more than 70 units of 350kW class superfast chargers that can be charged three times faster than those installed so far will be built in joint public-private partnerships in the major highway rest areas across the country. “

It took about 1 hour to charge 80% of the battery of an electric vehicle capable of driving 400 km with the 100 kW class fast charger that has been installed so far. . However, according to the charging technology applied to the vehicle, a time difference may occur, the Environment Ministry said.

In addition to the standalone slow charger, which has mainly been installed, the Ministry of the Environment plans to install various slow chargers, such as plug type and streetlight type. The standalone slow charger is a method of installing a charger in an electric vehicle parking space.

Electric vehicle chargers were installed in new apartments from the start, but already built apartments and residential areas had difficulty charging because EV chargers were difficult to install due to lack of parking space. Consequently, the Ministry of the Environment plans to supply 220V plugs to existing departments with a type of socket with charging function, and to install a type of public lighting with an electric vehicle charger added to public lighting in residential areas to operate in in conjunction with the residents’ priority parking area. Through this, the plan is to significantly increase the purchase demand so that even people who have hesitated to buy electric vehicles due to charging problems do not have any inconvenience in driving.

The Ministry of Environment plans to expand existing electric vehicle chargers by investing a budget of 92.3 billion won next year. Currently, there are 62,789 common chargers installed, which is not insufficient considering the supply of electric vehicles (134,430 units). However, it was mainly installed around public facilities where it was easy to secure a site and existing apartments lacked chargers, making charging difficult for residents of the old town.

According to data released by the Korea Transportation Institute in 2019, in Korea, residents mainly share common chargers located in apartment parking lots and charge once every two days, so the ratio of electric vehicles to chargers is about 2 to 1.

Consequently, the Ministry of the Environment will mainly build around 1,600 fast chargers in more accessible mobile stations, such as highway rest areas, national service stations on the roads, and service stations and charging stations in the city. In addition, more than 8,000 slow chargers are built around residential areas and workplaces where they stay for a long time to improve the convenience of haptic charging.

The Ministry of Environment and related organizations visit Eumseong Rest Area on Jungbu Expressway, which is the construction site for 350kW class super-fast chargers, on December 17 and jointly verify the installation plan.
