“Cho Doo-soon, XX you get off right away. If you don’t get off, the window breaks.”
At 7 a.m. on the 12th, on the side of the road in Hakon-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do. About 10 YouTubers and citizens who got out of the car surrounded the public vehicle with child rape criminal Cho Doo-soon, 68, who was released 10 minutes ago. They looked into the black glass window and swore. A man in his twenties yelled “I’ll kill you,” kicking at the window and door on the right side of the backseat where Cho is sitting multiple times. At the window, Mr. Jo turned his head while wearing a mask.
In 2008, 68-year-old Jo Doo-soon, a child rape offender who left Korean society terrified and in awe of the ‘Nayoung-i incident’, was released after 12 years in prison. While some YouTube and Internet community users have predicted “private retaliation” against Mr. Cho, some citizens have been controversial, such as having a chase with the official car in which Mr. Jo was released immediately after of his release.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 12th, Mr. Cho left the South Penitentiary while boarding an official vehicle around 6:45 am that day and went to the Ansan Probation Center near the address. For general parole purposes, they can individually visit the parole office within 10 days of release using public transportation. In Mr. Cho’s case, as some YouTubers and others predicted ‘private retaliation’, this was taken into consideration of the possibility of physical conflict with citizens during the movement process.
However, as more than 30 citizens flocked to the prison to prevent Mr. Cho from being released, it was not easier than expected. Members of the three civic groups, who had held a rally against the release of Cho Doo-soon in front of the prison since the afternoon of the previous day, have been lying at the entrance of the prison since 5:50 am on the day. As a result, there was a fight between the police and the assembly participants to secure the passage of vehicles. When three Ministry of Justice vehicles exited the prison, including the silver SUV carrying Mr. Cho, they threw the prepared eggs and tofu into the vehicle and the scene turned into a disaster.
This was not the end. Some of the rally participants even used motorcycles and vehicles to conduct commercial vehicle chases outside the prison. In this process, they sometimes encountered dangerous situations, such as threatening to drive several times to reduce the speed of the vehicle in which Mr. Cho got on. About 10 citizens blocked the road when the vehicle stopped for a while and then tried to force the door open, kicked the car and the right door of the vehicle in which Mr. Cho was crushed and part of the vehicle was damaged. When the car in which they got Mr. Cho stopped on the road several times for them, the police mobilized about 10 patrol cars to escort the public vehicle to and from the Ansan Probation Office.
Subsequently, the vehicle arrived at the Ansan Compliance Support Center (probation office) near the address where Mr. Cho will be residing at around 7:40 am, which was delayed about 30 minutes from the scheduled time. Around 50 people, including YouTubers and members of the conservative group, flocked to the street in front of the probation office to see Jo’s appearance. They yelled bad words and slogans when the vehicle in which Mr. Cho entered the probation center.
After exiting the vehicle, Mr. Cho entered parole without saying anything. Mr. Cho plans to continue with the procedures prescribed by law, such as receiving written notifications, notification of compliance issues, and logging in for approximately 2 hours at the probation office. After that, Mr. Cho plans to return to the residential area of Ansan using an official vehicle. It is reported that the Ministry of Justice will install a home monitoring device at Doo-soon Cho’s address and will recheck for communication errors.
