The height of Everest in the Himalayas, the highest mountain in the world, has increased by almost 1 meter in 60 years. According to the China Central Broadcasting Administration (CMG) and Xinhua News Agency, Chinese and Nepalese authorities said on the 8th that “the actual height of the joint Everest sounding was confirmed to be 8,848.86 m.” This is 86 cm taller than the previous official record. Everest spans Nepal and China. This is the first time that the two countries have come to a conclusion about the height of Everest.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nepalese President Vidia Debi Bandiri said in a mutual letter that “Everest is an important symbol of friendship between the two countries” and “I am very pleased to officially proclaim that the last height of Everest is of 8848.68 m “.
The Everest height survey started in 1849. India measured the current official height of 8848m by triangulation in 1954. However, there are media outlets claiming that India’s measurement year is 1955, such as Timesnow in India.
China also announced that the height of Everest was 8848.11 m by its own measurement in 1975, and it measured it again in 2005 and corrected it to 8844.43 m. In 1999, the US announced that it was 8850m using a GPS device. The height of Everest became a problem after an 8.1 earthquake in the Himalayas in 2015. This is due to the claim that the normal height has changed due to the earthquake.
Consequently, China and Nepal agreed to jointly measure the height of Everest when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Nepal in October last year. Nepal’s survey chief Prakash Joshi told the Spanish news agency EFE that “the controversy over the height of Everest will end with this survey.”
The name Everest is derived from George Everest (1790-1866), director of surveying for the British East India Company, who contributed to the study of the Himalayas. In Nepal, this is known as ‘Saharmata’ (top of the world). In Tibet, where the Himalayas meet, the name is ‘chomorangma’. It means ‘no bird can cross’. In China, Tibetan is called “Zumurangma” (珠穆朗瑪).
