Review of the criteria for determining active duty by the Ministry of Defense

On October 15, military service personnel will undergo a physical examination at the Jeonbuk Regional Human Resources Administration in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. Jeonju = Newsis

In the future, even if you have a lot of tattoos on your body, you will have to go to the army on active duty. Weight standards are also getting strict.

On day 1, the Ministry of National Defense announced a legislative amendment to the ‘Rules of evidence for the determination of military service, physical examination, etc.’ with the aim of making the physical examination standards more flexible.

Under the amendment, even if there are too many tattoos on the body, they are considered on active duty (grades 1-3). In the current rule, if there are many tattoos on the body or if the tattoos are exposed in the exposed areas, they are considered a fourth degree supplement. For this reason, tattoos were often abused as a way to evade military service. The complementary service serves as a social worker in public institutions. A Defense Ministry official said: “Socially, negative perceptions, such as rejection of tattoos, decreased and we decided that normal military service was possible, so we abolished the level 4 standard and decided that everyone was on active duty.” .

Criteria for determining active duty, such as body mass index (BMI), flat feet (flat feet), and refractive errors (farsightedness, myopia) are also reinforced to pre-2014 levels. In 2015, the standard that it was strengthened to solve the problem of temporary enlistment of active duty soldiers returned to the previous level and the number of targets for active duty soldiers was expanded.

First, the standard for determining the level 4 body mass index obtained by dividing body weight (kg) by the square of height (㎡) relaxed from “less than 17 33 or more” to “less than 16 35 or more “. Accordingly, if the height is 175cm, the overweight standard is currently set from 102kg to 108kg, and the underweight standard is set from 52kg to 48kg. If you are 175 cm tall and weigh between 48 and 108 kg, it means that you will be considered on active duty.

Currently, the angle between the talus and the first metatarsal bone was 15 degrees or more, but only 16 degrees or more in the future to be judged as level 4. The level 4 criterion was relaxed from -11D to -13D or more for myopia and from + 4D to + 6D for hyperopia.

On the other hand, the criteria for determining mental health have been strengthened compared to the current one. Until now, in relation to mental illness, active duty enlistment was possible for “ if there are current symptoms but few social and occupational dysfunctions ”, but in the future, active duty enlistment is only possible if “ there are no current symptoms or only a few minor symptoms. ” This is to reduce the burden on field commanders and prevent various incidents in the unit by blocking the enlistment of so-called concerned soldiers (currently helpful and supportive soldiers).
