The opening ceremony was held on the morning of the 27th at Sadong Port, Ulleung-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The event, organized by the Busan Regional Aviation Administration under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, was led by Ulleung County Chief Kim Byeong-soo, the Chairman of the Gyeong-hwan Choi County Council of the Ulleung County Council, Gyeongbuk Provincial Clinic, Nam Jin-bok, and Kim Sang-do, Head of the Aviation Policy Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Attended.
Ulleung Airport will be built as an airport serving small aircraft with 50 or fewer passengers. According to Gyeongbuk province, a total project cost of 6,633 billion won will be invested to build a 40-meter-wide, 1,200-m runway and a passenger terminal. This is the target for completion in 2025. The construction project is progressing in the order of relocation of the Ulleung Ilju road, recovery of the sea and construction of structures such as runways. Runways and aprons are at the Busan Regional Aviation Administration. Korea Airports Corporation will build additional facilities, such as the passenger terminal.
Construction of the Ulleung Airport began in 1981, some 40 years ago, on the recommendation of the government of Gyeongbuk Province and Ulleung County. Subsequently, based on the preliminary feasibility study in 2013, the basic plan was announced in 2015, the basic design in 2017, and the contractor (Daelim Industrial Consortium) was selected in December 2019, who carried out the first effort on the 27th. Construction has been delayed because approval and approval procedures, such as environmental impact assessment, have not been completed, but recent construction progress was decided.
Currently, the only way to get to Ulleungdo is to use the waterway. You can also go to Ulleungdo by helicopter, but the cost is high and it is only available in a limited way, so it is not an easy method for the general public.
There are four ferry routes to Ulleungdo: Pohang and Uljin in Gyeongbuk, Gangneung, and Donghae in Gangwon-do. In the case of the Gyeongbuk Pohang route, it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes by speedboat. If the waves are high and the weather conditions are not good, it can take up to 4 hours. It takes at least 7 hours to get to Ulleungdo from Seoul by switching between land and sea transportation. When Ulleung Airport begins operating, the required time from Seoul to Ulleung is expected to be reduced to less than an hour.
Ulleung-gun hopes that the transportation welfare of Ulleung-gun citizens will greatly improve, and the number of tourists visiting Ulleungdo will increase from 300,000 to 400,000 per year to 1 million.
As airlines that will operate out of the airport, small airlines are mentioned first rather than domestic airlines in general. Hi Air, an airline based in the Ulsan region, has operated planes between Ulsan, Yeosu and Gimpo, respectively, but plans to operate another small plane when it enters Ulleung Airport.
Kim Byeong-soo, director of Ulleung-gun, said: “The dreams and wishes that the people of Ulleung-gun have yearned for in 40 years will come true, and according to the changing times of airport construction, we will establish a plan teacher for Ulleungdo development and we will continue to promote not only the tourism industry, but also key projects. ” “I will focus my entire administration on making Ulleung, this Ulleung joyous, safe and happy for all civilians.”
