US Secretary of State Stephen Vegan is expected to visit Korea early next month.
According to a diplomatic news source in Washington on the 23rd (local time), Secretary Vegan is promoting a visit to Korea in early December.
It is reported that the representative of the United States Special Forces, Alex Wong, will also accompany Veegan’s visit to Korea.
Now that the Donald Trump administration ends its term on January 20, there appears to be little room for discussions to break up US negotiations on this visit. Rather, amidst the continuing instability surrounding the post-US presidential seizure of power, weight is being placed on the possibility of focusing on managing the stable situation on the Korean peninsula.
In particular, North Korea, which convened the Eighth Congress of the Labor Party in January next year, is interpreted as being able to modify its strategy with the United States in line with the launch of the Joe Biden administration.
Previously, at the time of the new administration in the United States, there were many cases where North Korea undertook provocations such as nuclear tests, launching long-range missiles, and withdrawal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to increase the rescue.
In the United States, there are some concerns that President Trump, who disagrees with the results of the presidential elections, may carry out an unexpected foreign policy before leaving the White House, and that North Korea is no exception. President Trump has already made further cuts to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan following the defeat of the presidential election.
As a special representative in North Korea, this visit to Korea, which is expected to be his last, is expected to have a special complaint for the Vegan Minister. Vice Minister Vegan has been in charge of labor-level negotiations with North Korea since August 2018 after being selected as a Special Representative in North Korea.
While he was promoted to undersecretary of state in December 2019, he devoted extraordinary affection to the negotiations with North Korea to the extent that he did not relinquish the title of Special Representative to North Korea. They are said to have greatly regretted the collapse of North Korea’s second summit held in Hanoi, Vietnam in February 2019.
Vice Minister Vegan visited Korea for the first time in September 2018, and after becoming Vice Minister, he visited Korea on a schedule of 3 days and 2 nights in early July. In February 2019, he visited Pyongyang for working-level negotiations ahead of the Hanoi-North Korea Summit.
