When Mr. A (50), who damaged the statue of former President Doo-Hwan Chun, installed in the former Presidential Village of Cheongnam University, was arrested, organizations related to May 18 demanded the release of Mr. A and the removal of the statue.

‘The May 18 Chun Doo-Hwan Roh Tae-woo Massacre, National Action of Cheongnam University’ (National Action of Cheongnam National University), composed of the Association of Free Families of Democratic Merit of May 18 and the May 18 Memorial Foundation It was a just and right act that tried to convict the main culprits of the rebellion and fraud, ”he asked for release.

He added: “It is unfair to try to establish historical justice, but to punish with a law that cannot be sustained,” he added.

Cheongnam University’s national action also demanded the removal of the statue. “If the statue is demolished as promised by Chungbuk province, all conflicts and controversies can be resolved,” said co-representative Jeong Ji-seong, saying, “We plan to carry out a stronger movement to demolish the statue in solidarity with the nation’s civic groups. “

The Cheongju Sangdang Police Department, which is investigating the case previously, arrested Mr. A on the 21st for damage to public property. Cheongju District Law Judge Kim Hwan-kwon questioned the suspect before his arrest (substantial warrant examination) against Mr. A, and issued a warrant saying he was “concerned about the escape.”

Mr. A is accused of attempting to cut the neck of the Jeon statue with a hacksaw in Cheongnamdae, Munmun-myeon, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do around 10:20 a.m. on the 19th.

A, who entered Cheongnam University as a tourist, committed a crime with a prepared hacksaw after turning off the power to the closed circuit television (CC) around the statue. In the process, the fence lock that blocked access to the CCTV was damaged. It was investigated that a part of the neck was damaged.

Mr. A told police: “I was angered when I saw the report that Chungbuk province kept the statue of Chun Doo-hwan, the main culprit in the Gwangju massacre. I tried to cut up the statue and throw it at Jeon’s house in Seoul. “

It is known that Mr. A, who lives in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, is actively involved in the organization related to May 18.

Immediately after the former president’s statue was damaged, the Cheongnam University Management Office closed the road to President Doo-Hwan Chun, where the statue was erected, and deployed surveillance personnel. Internal policy was established to repair the damaged statue. Whether the statue will be demolished has yet to be decided.

National Action Cheongnam National University will present an alternative to demolition of the statue at the ‘Tuesday Cultural Festival for Demolition of Former President Roh’ on the 24th. They are known to be discussing a proposal to replace the image of the president apologizing to the public for a sculpture. Since last month, the group has been holding presentations and displays in front of Cheongnam University every Tuesday to urge that the statue be removed.

Chungbuk province promised to demolish the statues of former presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo in May at the request of the May 18 organizations. However, as the pros and cons diverged due to a backlash from conservative groups, the demolition could not be started while public opinion was observed. The Chungbuk Provincial Council also voluntarily abolished the ordinance due to opposition from public opinion while attempting to enact an ordinance containing the basis for the removal of the statue.

As the conflict over the statue’s demolition escalated, Chungbuk province recently decided to install a sign in front of the statue containing the former president’s historical crimes.

The province built a statue of the former president in 2015 as part of Cheongnam University’s tourism revitalization project. There are 10 2.5m tall statues, from President Syngman Rhee to President Myungbak Lee. Cheongnam University was built in 1983, during the Fifth Republic, under the leadership of former President Chun Doo-hwan. It was used as a villa for the president, but was opened to the public by President Roh Moo-hyun in 2003, and the management rights were transferred to Chungbuk Province.
