You may remember a boat capsizing on Lake Uiam in Chuncheon last August.

Today, more than 100 days after the accident, the police announced the results of the final investigation.

Although no direct evidence could be found of who gave the work order, eight people, including officials and company representatives from the corresponding department, were turned over to the prosecution, alleging that an accident occurred due to a combination of poor measures.

A boat capsizing accident on Uiam Lake in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, in early August.

While the dam gate was open, three boats capsized in an attempt to block the floating artificial water island.

Eight people, including police officers, Chuncheon city officials and fixed-term workers at the city hall, drowned, two were rescued and five died.

The missing in their 50s have not yet been found.

Immediately after the accident, the police, who created a dedicated team, announced the results of the investigation after three months and fifteen days.

First, it was determined that both the city of Chuncheon and the manufacturer were responsible for the management of the artificial water island.

The anchors to fix the artificial water islands were not installed correctly and poor measures were taken, such as tolerating the removal of floats around the island on the day of the accident.

At the same time, the department head related to the city council, the department head, the head of the department in charge, 6 people from the two departments and 8 company representatives were handed over to the prosecution as an indictment.

The accusation was negligence in business, and the suspects also included a city hall employee who received a request for support for the boat and rescued a fixed-time worker at the site.

However, the police could not find direct evidence of who gave the dangerous work order because both the city council and the company in charge were killed at the time of the accident.

While the prosecution’s investigations continue, it is unknown if the eight suspects will go to trial.

Furthermore, most of the suspects have denied the allegations, so fierce battles are expected to continue in the civil and criminal trials that will follow.
