Review of 101 of 198 universities one month in advance
Athletes delete actual competitions and upload videos for vocal music
There were cheats in school tests too … Equity concerns seem to grow
Student A, who dreams of becoming a soccer player, takes a practical exam only evaluating individual skills like dribbling and shooting without actual games on entry to college this year. Student B, who wishes to specialize in vocal music, will be interviewed by uploading a video instead of singing in front of the teacher.
With the reappearance of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), the university admissions process is changing rapidly this year. A month before the frequent review, more than half of 101 of the 198 four-year colleges nationwide announced plans to change college admissions.
On the 30th, the Korean Council for University Education (Daekyo University) announced the changes to the 2021 college admission plan. According to the National Grand University of Education, a total of 101 universities that have applied for and approved a change in the Corona 19-related college admissions represent 51% of the total 198 colleges. The university said: “We have approved changes to the implementation plan of each university in order to prevent the spread of the crown and comply with quarantine guidelines,” he said. Emphasized.
Compared to college admissions prior to Corona 19, the changes to the arts and sports system are notable. According to the National Grand University of Education, Myongji University has decided not to conduct a performance evaluation in which examinees actually play group games of soccer, basketball and volleyball in the occasional selection of excellent athletes. Instead, in addition to measuring basic physical strength, in the case of soccer, we plan to select players through individual assessments such as dribbling and kicking ability. In Corona 19 situation, it was difficult to wear a mask and play the actual game, so the actual evaluation method was changed as a problem.
Due to concerns about droplet infection, frequent evaluations of music classes when singing or playing musical instruments have shifted to non-face-to-face. According to the Daekyo Association, Yonsei University has changed practical exams in the fields of arts and sports, such as vocal music, piano, orchestra, from face-to-face assessment to video assessment. This is a method in which the examinee records a video and uploads it for a specified period, and the teachers report on it and assess their abilities. In addition, universities in the field of arts and sports have changed the scope of recognition of their performance in consideration of the fact that this year several contests were not held in which candidates could demonstrate their practical skills thanks to Corona 19.
The problem is that such a change in college admissions can cause confusion among candidates. In addition to the arts and sports department, screenings for humanities and natural sciences students, such as the Department of Students and Essays, have changed the schedule for interviews and written tests. Representatively, Yonsei University postponed the essay test from October 10 to December 3, after the College Academic Ability Test (SAT), and as a result, the test schedules of the major universities in Seoul were concentrated immediately after the SAT. Seong-ho Lim, CEO of Haneul Education at Jongno Academy, noted that “confusion has become unavoidable before the occasional application submission.”
Another problem is that controversy over equity may arise in the future. In the case of the field of arts and sports, it is questionable whether an urgent practical assessment method such as remote conversion can be a criterion for the selection of excellent students. In the case of many universities, there have been instances of misconduct, such as students meeting to solve problems or share answers while taking non-face-to-face midterms and final exams in the last semester. Concerns are raised.
