The government will invest 500 billion won in expanding radioactive waste disposal facilities (shields) and strengthening security management over the next five years.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy announced on the 28th that it had held the IX Nuclear Promotion Committee chaired by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun at the Seoul Government Building and deliberated and decided on the ‘Second Basic Plan for Management Medium and Low Level Radioactive Waste ‘.
The second basic plan for the management of medium and low level defense waste is a statutory plan that is established every 5 years as a planning period of 30 years in accordance with the Defense Waste Management Law. It contains instructions and measures for the management of radioactive waste in the medium and long term.
The II Basic Plan, which was decided on this day, was established taking into account that the number of nuclear power plant decommissioning barriers is expected to increase due to the gradual reduction of nuclear power plants, which has resulted in higher demand barrier safety.
The key tasks were to expand the necessary infrastructure without interruption, strengthen the ability to take control, inspect and dispose of defenses, and establish a management system that prioritizes security.
Specifically, after the Gyeongju Mid and Low Level Defense Facility First Stage Disposal Facility was completed in 2014, the second and third stage disposal facilities at the site will be secured as originally planned, and the facilities to support the defense facility, such as the facility to take control and inspect the barriers and the barrier analysis center, will be expanded. I did it.
It establishes detailed acceptance criteria for each characteristic and level of anti-repellent, introduces a certification inspection program for anti-repellants and promotes the development of anti-equivalent shipping containers.
Along with this, we will improve the barrier safety management system and operate a public safety inspection team in which the public participates. It also plans to expand the dissemination of information, such as radiation doses near barriers and transport barriers in real time.
To this end, it plans to support 500 billion won over the next five years through the use of the waste management fund.
The Ministry of Science and ICT reported on the direction of the nuclear energy promotion policy at the meeting.
The main framework is to strengthen the capabilities of the national nuclear power plant industry and promote technological innovation to expand nuclear exports and develop new markets in the future.
The Ministry of Science and Technology said: “We plan to expand the export market throughout the entire cycle of nuclear power plants through customized export strategies.”
The Ministry of Science and Technology also reported on the ‘Atomic Reactor Technology Development Promotion Strategy’, which created the initial market for small module reactors (SMR) and promoted the development of Korean SMR.
The government explained that, as a result of Korea’s continued investment in nuclear power systems since the 1970s, the technology of large light-water reactors has reached a world-class level. Currently, it is cultivating small reactor design capabilities.
A government official explained: “The commercial nuclear power market has grown mainly for large light water reactors, but due to rising social costs and diversification of the energy market, the market for nuclear power plants on a large scale it is stagnating and instead the SMR market is emerging. “
