The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) in Jeollanam-do is not serious, as there have been four cases in one week. In particular, it is spreading to livestock slaughterhouses, as well as ducks and fattening ducks, and because infections are often asymptomatic, quarantine authorities are fighting to block the spread of avian influenza because there is a high possibility that the farmer is not even aware of the infection before being examined.

According to Jeonnam Province on the 13th, among the 10 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks across the country, Jeonnam has 4. Meanwhile, 1.33 million ducks were killed. In Jeonnam, since the first suspected case was discovered at Sijong-myeon fattening duck farm, Yeongam-gun on day 5, a total of 4 highly pathogenic AI cases have been confirmed, including 3 farms and 1 slaughterhouse at 9 am of the day.

Since the discovery of the first suspected case in Yeongam, confirmed cases of highly pathogenic AI in Jeollanam have not stopped. On day 9, four days after the first confirmation, a highly pathogenic diagnosis was also found in the meat duck farm as Naju city was aging, and the next day, a highly pathogenic AI occurred in the duck slaughterhouse in Naju .

Quarantine authorities are tense as there is no precedent for confirmed highly pathogenic AI at Jeonnam slaughterhouses.

On day 11, the presence of highly pathogenic AI was confirmed at the Jangseong duck farm. On day 12, a day later, H5-type AI antigens were detected in two duck meat farms in Deokjin-myeon, Yeongam-gun, and a detailed examination is underway to determine whether it is highly pathogenic.

In Jeonnam, the highly pathogenic AI, which reappeared after three years, is spreading at a terrifying rate around the duck farm.

Previously, in 2017, 812,000 farms were 40 farms during a month, but this year it already exceeded one million.

In one week, a total of 1.33 million were killed, including 144,000 ducks on three AI-prone farms in the province and one slaughterhouse, as well as 39 farms within a 3 km radius of the outbreak area.

This means that 492 million ducks were raised on 267 farms in Jeollanam-do, and a third of the ducks that were raised were gone within a week.

Quarantine authorities noted that there is a high possibility that this spread trend will continue for the time being. Unlike previous cases, this highly pathogenic AI does not present symptoms or link between infected farms, which makes preventive response difficult.

In the past, there have been mortality from avian influenza infection, diarrhea and decreased spawning rates, but this year there are few signs of this. Furthermore, the fact that it is difficult to find a link between the infected farms is also embarrassing for the quarantine authorities.

In fact, in the case of the Naju slaughterhouse, the test at the farm that shipped the infected ducks was negative, but the cause of the positive test has not yet been found at the slaughterhouse. Furthermore, quarantine authorities are concentrating on finding infected farms by conducting close inspections of all farms within a 10 km radius of the outbreak farm, but only finding infected farms late rather than blocking infection.

Jeollanam-do ordered a temporary halt to the movement of poultry and related workers and vehicles in the province until midnight to block the spread. He also received instructions to strengthen responsible quarantine, such as disinfection of livestock-related facilities and vehicles, rapid inspection of epidemiological farms, expansion and installation of a checkpoint for duck farms, the appointment of an official dedicated to the poultry farm and farm facility inspection through affiliates.

A Jeonnam-do official said: “AI outbreaks are spreading in a different way than in the past.”
