US Undersecretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea Vegan urged North Korea to engage in denuclearization talks ahead of the Party’s 8th Congress early next month. He also stressed that the Singapore agreement is still in force and said that he will faithfully pass on his experience in negotiations with North Korea to the next administration. This is reporter Dowon Kim. Undersecretary of State Vegan, who will retire from his current position after the change in administration, recounted in a conference the last two years of denuclearization negotiations. Although the agreement has not advanced further, Veegan said the Singapore agreement remains in effect. He said now is the time for North American and North American countries to move forward, paying particular attention to the run-up to the 8th Party Congress in North Korea next month. Veegan explained that the guarantee of the regime and the easing of sanctions that North Korea demands are only possible if denuclearization advances, but that does not mean that the United States will not do anything until then. However, we must agree on the final state of denuclearization and a step-by-step roadmap for it. The reason for the breakdown of the Hanoi talks was that North Korea’s working-level negotiating team in preparation for the summit had virtually no decision. He also said that he is still convinced that diplomacy is the only way to solve North Korea’s nuclear problem and that he will share his experiences with the next administration. At the same time, Veegan emphasized that it is in our mutual interest that the ROK-US alliance, which shares democratic values, works for an Indo-Pacific region free from coercion. It can be interpreted as repeatedly urging Korea to join the US front against China. Before the conference, at a breakfast with Unification Minister Lee In-young, he said he strongly supports inter-Korean cooperation. Minister Vegan will conclude his farewell visit with a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa. I am YTN Kim Do-won.
