Following President Moon Jae-in, the Democratic Party leadership also drew a line in the debate on selective or universal payments, saying now is the time to focus on quarantine and not to discuss the fourth payment of the disaster grant.

However, the Governor of Gyeonggi, Lee Jae-myung, who is promoting basic disaster income in Gyeonggi Province, interpreted it differently as the empowerment of President Moon.

Before President Moon Jae-in’s New Year’s press conference, top members of the Democratic Party also held a closed-door meeting on disaster grants.

This is because Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myeong, who disagreed with the party in emphasizing support for all the people, officially requested that this part be resolved.

In this discussion, the party leadership, including Chief Executive Officer Nak-yeon Lee, reaffirmed the Party’s basic principles regarding disaster subsidies.

Now is the time to expand your funding and depending on your needs you can make selective or universal payments, but now is the time to focus on quarantine.

Although he did not give a direct response, it appears that he actually expressed his objection to the Governor’s discussion of supporting the national disaster relief fund.

This is in line with President Moon Jae-in’s announcement at a press conference that the next support should be discussed while the quarantine situation is observed.

On the other hand, Governor Lee Jae-myeong mentioned the president’s press conference on his social media and emphasized that he would work on the economic quarantine as long as the financial capabilities of Gyeonggi Province allow.

He showed the intention to go ahead with the disaster basic income project in Gyeonggi-do as it stands, and presented different interpretations of the president’s statements.

A Gyeonggi-do official said he believes he will play an active role in the party, and said he believes that the president’s words should be actively made locally whenever necessary.

In this regard, Governor Lee plans to accelerate the promotion of basic disaster income at the Gyeonggi-do level, worth 1.4 trillion won, according to the party’s position to be communicated soon.

At the same President Moon press conference, the current leadership of the Democratic Party and Governor Lee Jae-myung made different interpretations.

Instead of arguing which one is right in the disaster subsidy discussion, he once again showed the landscape of power within the ruling party.
